Potential outcomes of Russian invasion of Ukraine discussion (WWIII/nukes?)

Not sure what you mean here but I mean stuff mean to blow shit up as opposed to propulsion or construction (yes, this happened) something. Underground included

I will never forget this video. Would have been a more difficult question if you said how many were denotated above ground

On October 30, 1961, the USSR detonated the largest nuclear weapon ever tested and created the biggest man-made explosion in history.

The blast, 3,000 times as strong as the bomb used on Hiroshima, broke windows 560 miles away.

The flash of light from the blast was visible up to 620 miles away.

The Tsar Bomba as the test was ultimately known, had a yield between 50 and 58 megatons, twice the size of the second-largest nuclear blast.

A bomb of this size would create a fireball 6.4 square miles large and would be able to give humans third-degree burns within 4,080 square miles of the bomb’s epicentre.

I agree but a Fukushima-style accident is almost inevitable in the long run imo.

Let the record show that basically no one had chosen >1000 before the answer coming in.

Basically 1000 above ground too, nuts. I would have thought <100

I only knew it was >1000 because I watched a documentary some time ago about the Bikini Atoll where the USA did their nuclear testing in the '50s.

Some pretty insane testing there including the biggest USA nuke blast ever when they made a miscalculation and detonated a bomb that produced a blast almost three times bigger than they anticipated. whoopsies

I knew for sure it was in at least the high hundreds, because of vague recollection of seeing the number before and it being surprisingly high. But my brain was vague on what “surprisingly high” meant exactly. So wasn’t sure if 500-1000 or 1000+. And actually went with a failed game theory take that the correct door would be #3

But yeah if you thought the answer was < 100… it’s not dumb to think that because of course that is the result of a concerted effort to hide what was happening from the public. Definitely do more reading about the era of nuclear testing and the shit they were getting up to, though. There is some wild shit in there.

Right so if you wouldn’t want to encourage Ukraine to be in NATO or be generally aligned with the west, why are you giving them weapons? If you want to encourage Ukraine to find a modus vivendi with Russia, giving them billions of dollars worth of armament and training seems to work at cross purposes to that. It makes the Russians mad and encourages Ukraine to try and stand up to them.

The Ukrainians also seem to feel this way?

Putin did this without any provocation from the West:

You twist yourself in knots to blame the West for everything but seems like the problem is that we have a psychopath that will slaughter anyone who doesn’t accept his rule, and as inconvenient as it may be for you, the Ukrainians have made it damn clear they don’t accept his rule.

Giving Ukraine the ability to shoot his planes out of the sky may or may not slow him down but pretty sure laying back and enjoying the rape isn’t going to do a damn thing to stop it.

I never blamed the west for Grozny or the Chechen wars.

You can also see all the craters from nuclear testing at the Nevada National Security Site.

Being better armed gives one leverage against a more powerful adversary and therefore a better negotiating position. See also: Russia, nukes.

I want to say I knew it was over 1K before reading Command and Control. Should definitely read it if you haven’t.

Cliffs: We’re way more likely to accidentally detonate our own nuke / lose one to a bad actor than a nuclear exchange with Russia.

I didn’t know this. Did they not think to get it in writing? Maybe in treaty form?

you are thinking of this. it was not a treaty, it’s something lesser

But I’m sure if there’s a coup then the Unspecified Nice Guys will take power.
