I have a couple good reusable masks for myself, and a couple cloth masks for golf. Nothing disposable I could give them. I also expect them to be here for hours. Even with masks on I’m not trying to be around other people indoors for more than a few seconds. And I’d have to stand over their shoulder the whole time to keep an eye on them in what amounts to a hallway closet where the ducts and HVAC stuff is.
I agree if I leave they’ll take it all off right away.
The general answer is lack of exposure to other cultures. Over 98% of the Czech Republic is comprised of native-born Czechs and a large portion of them lived most of their lives in an authoritative state where everybody around you looked like you and sounded like you.
If you’re in that tiny percentage of brown people, you’re likely either Roma (which nearly everybody hates) or Muslim (of which like 2 exist in the country).
Yeah I agree with you. It is a commonly held misconception that Western countries (perceived as white Christian countries) are inherently stable and backwards countries (perceived as non-white and non-Christian) are inherently unstable and prone to anarchy. This is just straight willful ignorance and racism.
I don’t think it’s racism it’s just a misunderstanding of political science. It’s pretty clear that democracies are more stable than other forms of government, on average. This get conflated as west vs rest or white vs not because there are more democracies in the west.
I disagree, this belief has a long history in Euro and White supremacy circles. Its present in the attitudes of French and English settlers of North America toward NA indigenous societies, Spanish colonists in South America toward SA indigenous societies, Dutch and Belgian settlers in Africa. Time and time again white people came, saw, misunderstood, conquered, imposed false narratives about enlightened whites and nonwhite savages.
This is all true for sure. It’s typical colonialism. We aren’t really disagreeing here. I’m mostly splitting hairs to illustrate that there is a core of truth at the heart of the idea even if it has been used in bad faith by racists who are making a correlation error. The correlation is political history not skin color.
I generally agree with most of the gloomy stuff ITT, but have to push back a bit against the civil war/mass exodus of American refugee/concentration camp stuff.
Americans are too lazy and self absorbed to wear a piece of fabric over their faces while shopping for organic blueberries. They literally lost their shit not being able to get riblets from Applebee’s for a couple months.
I know the outrage machine on Twitter is fully dialed up to the Civil War setting, but if push ever came to shove, only an exceedingly tiny fraction of a fraction of Americans would come anywhere near taking up arms and waging war. This is just my opinion of course.
I’m no fan of Homeland Security personnel detaining protestors, it isn’t good. But it is still a huge leap from that to tracking down the identity of posters on Internet message boards and throwing them in concentration camps.
I agree it is a slippery slope, but there’s a reason slippery slope is an argumentative fallacy.
Honestly I think we need more videos like this. It was like in Vietnam, public opinion turned when the media started showing what war there was actually like with video and pictures. Americans are dumb and need to see shit at its worst.
Unfortunately hospitals are super against this and that employee will probably be fired. I know a bunch of doctors got fired early on just for talking about it. Which seems dumb, hospitals should want to show this stuff, just make sure you can’t identify anyone.
Hopefully we can get a youtube version of this so it can get shared on facebook where the majority of people who need to see it are.
I think that’s a fair comment. My point is that the average American Star Spangled Ding Dong on the street who has thoughts like “that’s the kind of thing that happens in Syria, it could never happen in the US of Motherfuckin A” is absolutely not drawing on their depth of knowledge about the historical successes and failures of various states with various political systems. The median American who looks down his nose at “those people in those countries” is drawing entirely on cultural misconceptions and pro-western indoctrination.
Looks like that video was making the rounds back in June and has been attributed to Mexico and a couple other Latin American countries. Definitely bad though for wherever it was (and probably COVID-19 related), but I’m not sure that is actually a recent video from Texas.
With all this discussion about civil war I wanted to drop a new podcast I found that talks about exactly that. It has been really good so far. He starts back in april and people who recommended it said he predicted a lot of what is happening. Only on the 2nd episode though so I can’t confirm yet.
Further discussion should happen in the podcast thread obv. So I’ll post it there too but I just wanted people who are talking about it here to see it here.
Just want to add I don’t think its likely either, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a massive rise in right wing violence. It’s an interesting podcast though.
