COVID-19: Chapter 4 - OPEN FOR BUSINESS

I’d cancel my leave instead.

US might be publishing ‘real’ death count by then (~50% higher than published now if ROW stats, not banana republics are to be believed)

George Floyd

with no guarantee that previous infection creates immunity and, if it does, for how long?

CDC have a test that works now. No proven therapeutics. Have more vents but you’re only getting off a vent alive 30% of the time.

325k deaths admitted by USA = 450k real so I’d do my net worth @ 325k deaths by end 2020

NYC could cut their police budget, use the money to entirely fund the WHO, and have a couple billion left over.

They’ve got to read the room here. In a global pandemic you don’t just publish research in the normal course, especially when it clearly can be misused by people that desperately don’t want to follow local public health guidance.

This. It will be really hard for 200-500K people to die and not have a majority of the population be within 2-3 degrees of separation.

Like, Why the fuck wouldn’t it be? That’s one of the major perks of working from home.

Personal anecdote… my wife is a supervisor at an assisted living facility that is in the midst of its first COVID outbreak. So far the entry point was one staff member, but no other staff members (including my wife who just got her negative test result back yesterday, she’s getting tested again today) have tested positive as of yet. Roughly 20% of the residents have tested positive, and that number is almost certainly going to climb in the near future.

One thing my wife is now pretty sure of is that this thing doesn’t spread very well when everyone is masked up. The residents unfortunately aren’t able to be masked (they won’t cooperate, it’s a type of facility where that’s to be expected) and they seem to be getting clobbered. The whole ‘masks are being worn to protect other people from you’ line doesn’t seem to be super accurate.

Yes we’re in strict quarantine now which means we’re not going to get coffee anymore. We were 70% sure we were positive when we got the negative result back, so we’re obviously relieved that the bullet missed us.

As to what it’s like for people who are ‘on the front lines’… yeah it’s fucking wild. I wish my wife would keep a journal, in my view it’s basically history happening to us.

I will say this though: if working all day with someone who was positive doing physical tasks doesn’t cause my wife to be positive a drive through where you and the drive through worker are both masked/gloved is probably close to 100% safe. We’re talking 99.999% safe here where the remainder is basically ‘but what if you’re wearing your mask with your nose hanging out’.

Right, but this guy wants to go on vacation while putting in a token amount of work a day so that he still keeps all his vacation days.

My friend was in a similar spot - supervisor in an assisted living facility, active cases among staff and residents, always aggressively masked. She got covid about a month ago - managed to quarantine in her bedroom and not give it to the husband and kids.

That last part suggests that the reports that asymptomatic spread isn’t all that common are probably more true than not unless she was quarantining away from them before she knew she was positive.

One case so who knows.

I would be willing to bet on under 325k admitted deaths by the US by EOY. Not sure if there’s a betting thread or reliable escrows here? Johns Hopkins site to keep track?

Top four countries in COVID cases:

USA
Brazil
Russia
UK

all run by darlings of the right wing.

Yep, I’m 36 and my girlfriend is 26 and it’s never felt odd at all. She’s super mature and has her shit together so it’s a natural fit. And obviously the age difference gets less important as you get older.

I would keep suggesting a journal to her. Could actually be turned into a book when this is all over. I have a feeling publishers might be seeking out frontline workers who have stories to tell

And yet we open for business and cases continue to fall. I feel as if I’m taking crazy pills

Early reopening states are almost all on the rise and the ones that aren’t are basically flat. The only places consistently falling at this point are the states that are just starting to open and were closed through May and beyond.

To the surprise of no one here probably:

I’d definitely chime in from time to time if the thread gets revived. Obviously won’t be posting any more stories as I’ve been locked down for a little while.

For cuse and others, if you’re frustrated with the dating prospects where you are and have flexibility to move, then I’d highly, highly recommend Mexico City. It’s a super progressive city and I was pleasantly surprised with the dating prospects here.

Most women I dated know 2-3 languages, have traveled quite a bit, liberal viewpoints, well educated, etc.

My ex had 2 Masters, a PHD, spoke 3 languages, professor, yoga teacher, etc.

My girlfriend now studied nursing for 6 years at a school rated equally to USC, speaks 2 languages, and is all around amazing.

Unless you’re already in a dating hotspot in the USA, I’d say whatever you’re used to dating there, you could probably add 2-3 points in terms of looks and overall quality dating here.

No domestic flight lockdown in the US but still Trump will be confused how this didn’t rip through the whole of China.

Flights between Beijing and Wuhan resume

Flights between the central Chinese city of Wuhan, the city where the Covid-19 pandemic began, and the capital city Beijing resumed on Tuesday after Beijing lowered its health emergency status from medium to low risk.

According to the official China Daily, a single round-trip flight operated by China Southern Airlines is now running between the two cities, and travellers are no longer required to go into quarantine for 14 days.

Before the pandemic, Wuhan International Airport was a major transit hub connecting Chinese flights from the far east and west.

But during the pandemic, Wuhan experienced 76 days of strict lockdown. Transport in and out of the city was limited to emergency aid.
