What’s really weird is that this works on mobile. Try googling “187 cm in ft in” on your phone (I’m using Chrome, in case that matters). For me it promptly says “6 feet 1.622 inches”, whereas on computer the same search gives fractions of a foot.
This is true. I can think of three things imperial measures are still near-universally used for here:
People’s height
The distance The Proclaimers would be willing to walk
Eh, I feel like F vs C is a wash and it’s just familiarity. You never have to convert from one thing to another (e.g. feet → mile) which is where metric is much better, but there’s nothing awkward about C. Feet and inches are better for height than centimetres because most people are between 5’ and 6’, or just a little over 6’, and with only 12 gradations it’s easy to get an intuitive sense of what a particular height looks like in practice.
Fahrenheit is a very convenient scale for the weather, as 0 and 100 F are pretty good markers for extreme temperatures, and 1 degree C is a pretty large unit. Once you get outside of the range of temperatures commonly experienced in the weather, the choice of C or F is totally arbitrary.
I agree that needing to use three significant figures for height is cumbersome. I guess people could use meters with a single ecimal place, or I guess decimeters, but no one really uses decimeters.
Currently entering day 3 of being on my ass with one of the worst flus I’ve ever had. Never had one last this long. Just another reason that winter woat.
So a house in my parents neighborhood has 2 of the figures below in their front yard. Am I missing some obscure meaning or are these just racist as hell? He also has a sign that says “we don’t call 911 we call 357” in a neighborhood that barely has crime.
Edit:not sure why the photo is upside down when I upload it
Yeah I figured it was just wanted to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind. We are also walking distance from the north side of Chicago and there is an older black couple that lives down his block so I was just like wtf when I walked by.
