I was going to make a post about trans issues circa the Rowling controversy and never did. I’m on board with the idea that gender is socially constructed and that trans women are women. However, that doesn’t mean that everywhere the word “women” was ever used can be replaced with this new understanding of the word. Sometimes people were using “women” where what they meant was “women born female”, since previously there was no distinction between these ideas.
In the case of sport, we don’t segregate for sociocultural reasons as with something like bathrooms, we segregate for biological reasons. Appealing to socially-constructed gender isn’t really relevant. If we did segregate for sociocultural reasons, then that would just be straight up sexism and the answer would be to stop doing it. I don’t think “abolish women’s sport” is going to win many supporters.
I stumbled upon Essence of Thought on YT in the midst of a moderately-sized kerfluffle in the atheist community. The following videos (I hope; haven’t watched them in a while) address the issue of trans athletes and the science.
My lay-person’s tldr: trans athletes are on HRT drugs which keep androgen levels low–lower than that of many cis-female athletes. There’s no conclusive evidence that trans women even have an advantage.
Trans women in sports is a pet topic over at 22. I always feel that the conversation is pointless without the perspectives of both cis women athletes and trans women athletes, both of which are always neglected to be cited. Some things are certain:
At the very top level of sports, everyone is a genetic freak.
Transphobes always point to the successful trans athletes. No one has stats about the mediocre trans athletes
Testosterone is a helluva drug.
Drawing a clean line between men and women that takes into account intersex and trans people in a respectful manner is really hard.
The counterpoint is obvious: we should not glorify people who sacrifice their longevity and livelihood for our own amusement. Yes, I know this calls into question my nfl Fandom.
