Winter cricket and bridge thread - Held over by popular demand

Yeah, you’re pretty much flat wrong on this one.

I’ll admit, I watch golf some. Otherwise all professional sport could cease to exist overnight and it would have no effect on my life and, I’d argue, negligible effect globally. An argument can be made it would be net positive. It’s basically professional tribalism.

Someone can say this about virtually every form of amusement

True, but few other forms have so many huge downsides or create so much harm.

The effects of screen time on children is not all that well understood.

Only sports I really care about is BJJ and MMA. But I disagree strongly with your assessment.

Sports bring a LOT of joy to peoples lives, even if you think its dumb it’s real. Thats a huge net benefit. It also seems like a way out for a lot of groups in America that don’t have a way out of poverty.

I could see the argument for football/MMA/Boxing to be banned because it is of course super bad for peoples health, but I also strongly agree that consenting adults should do what they want. Maybe don’t let them do it as kids, but once they’re adults they should do what they want. Pretty sure the vast majority of pro sports players would still choose to play sports.

The health stuff is secondary to the enforcement of tribalism as a net negative to society. Sport is basically a lifelong training course in us vs them and zero sum.

It’s very conservative when you think about it.

@clovis8 OK you don’t care about the issue, stop hanging around expecting people to find that impressive, let the people who do care discuss it in peace.

Lol. It’s a LC thread where I was asked several questions to which I am responding.

“You are flat wrong on this one” isn’t a question.

Counterpoint: it’s also reinforcement that one’s tribe losing is not some existential threat or illegitimate, which is basically essential for society to run.

Gonna quote myself here–this article is relevant to the current discussion.

And it allows us to be tribal in a way that’s not threatening to society. Teams bond people together, and can be a social lubricant among strangers. A common language. Events like the World Cup (soccer) demonstrate the commonality among us as humans.

I actually disagree with that central thesis. I believe it is true in the USA. That’s why sports mirror the society they are apart of rather than just automatically slanting right.

If you ended sport overnight and think it wouldn’t be a large net negative for the world your brain is broken. Youth sport is very important. Health and exercise is as well. There are so, so many teams that are the heart of cities. Imagine NY without the Yankees, LA without the Lakers. Toronto without the Leafs.

Had a first date last night. When I got to her house to pick her up, I saw she still had Christmas lights up. I almost backed out and drove away. Date was ok but I probably won’t call again because of that nonsense.
