Winter cricket and bridge thread - Held over by popular demand

Quite surprised in the current climate that more Germans (esp in the East) don’t think Sudetenland belongs to them.

I saw that. My point was about clovis’ comment about acting human. Rape is probably much more normal human behavior than we’d like to admit. Like, until recently women were basically treated as property in most societies throughout history. Even today something like one in five women will be raped or experience an attempted rape. I doubt men showed more respect for women before organized societies developed, either. That’s all to say, I don’t think Clovis’ righteously indignant call for people to “act human” would have the intended effect he seems to think it would. Really it was the righteous indignation in Clovis’s comment that bothered me. He always seems to make comments like that regarding sexual abuse, it comes across as performative to me.

Yeah not seeing that.

I’m not so sure, and I’ve been loathe to chip in because I don’t want to be a guy arguing with a woman over matters of rape. We can agree it’s much more widespread than the statistics show (I knew two victims and neither reported the attacks, one was raped in her apartment by a doctor friend she trusted, and the other was raped by a stranger late at night in a park).

The first seems to fit your description of it being a substitute for consensual sex by someone who clearly should and did know better and who we can hope will self-reform; the second was committed by someone (I can only assume) whose deep rooted hatred of women was exerted through sexual violence. That guy is never going to think "Yes, hell. I did fk-up here. Yes what I did was wrong. I grew-up since then and found other ways to have sex. " unless he’s caught and successfully rehabilitated, because he’s psychologically disturbed.

I don’t see a WAAF: Weather That Portends Our Climate Apocalypse thread, so I’ll leave this here… A bomb cyclone with a pressure similar to a cat 4 hurricane is hitting Iceland. Then it’s going to swirl around a second bomb cyclone until they combine and head for the UK. Insert ThisIsFine.gif here.

I would make a more generalized claim that you can’t educate people into creating a crimeless society. You can’t bring along a crime-free world by eliminating poverty. Given sufficient critical mass of people, there will be murder, there will be theft, and, yes, there will be rape.

Oh, I think that’s basically right. It’s a matter of degree, like rape was probably never the typical human sexual encounter (like with ducks), but I’m sure it’s more common than the 20% of women in their lifetime stat and probably has been for the last 200k years.

NYC politics are insane.

In the show Bosch, the second in command at the LAPD has a dedicated driver. I’ve always wondered if that’s real.

I think there’s a good argument that they should be unenforceable as against the public good. At minimum, binding on both parties to be silent.

This is a topic I know we touched on lil with the Rogan shit but I’m just curious, and I hope this conversation doesn’t ge too nasty, but do people here think transgender woman should be able to compete in sports against women?

I think its super unfair and really fucks people over. Going through puberty as a man gives you tons of physical advantages outside of testosterone. I’m sure @hobbes9324 could give us the best picture of this.

I’m just curious because I seen a lot of people on the left today arguing they should be able to compete with women and arguing against it is transphobic.

Not an area of mine (transgender/hormone treatment) - but I’ve routinely had to just brute force medical problems that one of my female colleagues were simply physically unable to do (I’m a big guy 6’2’’ 250 Polk High type) and getting a hip dislocation or intubating a 400 lb patient there is just an “umph” aspect to it. To be honest, I don’t have any sort of idea what the solution would be, but the concern re sports seems reasonable.

I don’t know if common sense applies in highly charged cases like this, but if it did I think it would come down on the side of born-females being unable to compete as effectively.

A trans games might be the fairest solution for all.

Turns out we don’t know as much about gender as we thought, or at least determining it isn’t easy. One of the tests they use in international competition measures testosterone levels which have dq’d women with natural levels that indicate they are “men.” Here’s a RadioLab that talks about it: Gonads: Dutee

I have very mixed feelings about this. I played tons of different sports growing up. Until about the age of 10 or 11, I played mostly on co-ed squads and, while I wasn’t the best player, I could hold my own with most of the guys. Then, puberty hit and it became clear that testosterone is a hell of a drug, and that gender division was probably for the best, as a general rule. The last year I played on the boys’ lacrosse team was just 3 months of repeatedly getting my ass handed to me by guys who had just shot up 4 inches and gained 15 pounds of muscle since the previous season

That being said, I think it also depends on the sport. If you’re talking about a footrace, or tennis, or even weightlifting, I’d probably lean towards allowing transgender women to compete against cis women just because I think that allowing the competition is relatively low harm. The more contact is involved in the sport, especially if you start talking about straight up combat sports, I am a bit more reluctant because the risk of actual physical harm is higher.

I think my main problem even for tennis and footraces is people who went through puberty as a male will have huge advantages in height, bone structure, muscle structure, reaction times etc. It’s not just testosterone. They won’t be hurt physically but it would probably suck for them if they trained their whole lives to become the best in the sport and then they have to compete with people who have huge natural advantages.

At the end of the day I think the women competing in these sports should decide if they wanna compete with transgender women or not.

Tennis should not be included imo… Its a very physical sport at the top.
