Who will run in 2020?

On the one hand, the right banged that drum pretty hard all through Obama and their base fairly lapped it up, it seems to me. On the other hand, they did have to bang it through two terms, so there’s that. Plus there’s all kinds of ways you could argue Trump is just not viewed through the same lens without even bothering to look at the glaring race factor.

Wow that was excellent. Do I need to start watching HILL TV?

It’s the only news I consume. Krystal Ball is a boss.

You’ll be a lot better better informed on facts and actual policies differences between the candidates and be much less likely to sound an ignorant fool such as people like @vaya1 if you do

I watch the Hill a fair amount but I would list them in the cautious category. They always run positive stories about Bernie/Tulsi but literally bash everyone else no matter what. While that’s not really problematic on its own, they seem to have a very specific narrative that is most often divisive.

They’re good and bad. The show with Ball and the other guy generally approaches the news from the right angles, in my opinion, but they also are really into Tulsi which probably speaks to their larger blind spots.

It’s obviously like 1000% better than anything on cable news.

Well, the R base be different from the D base. It makes sense for them to stir up as much anti Hillary/Obama kulturkampf rage as they can bc that’s a huge part of what R voters crave.

Absolute shocking turn of events that the line in the sand for yang gang re: Pete isn’t his m4a attacks but his calling racists racist

I’ve been a GOPPete hater since he started rolling around in the muck with the lobbyists thank you. You’re super super close to my no longer reading your posts honestly. Actually scratch that… I think I’m done with you.

@Trolly the reason Paul/yang/lulsi seem so similar is because they’re the choice of trolls who want to gaslight the left. If they have such great crossover appeal you’d think their supporters would be over at r/thedotard convincing the chuds to vote for them. Everyone here would hold their nose and vote for yang if he somehow won the primary.

This is pretty much sums up how I feel, but then aren’t all those who still deal with family and loved ones who voted for Trump just as complicit?

Well, I think (hope) that for a fair number of people that voted for Trump they bought into the “successful businessman, drain the swamp, not another goddam insider politician” narrative about Trump. I’m probably more politically engaged than the average American and I didn’t have more than a vague idea about Trump’s racial views until after he got elected. He was always misogynistic, though, and than became more obvious as his campaign went along.

I’m unwilling to knee-jerk lump all the voters in the midwest who went for trump as racially motivated, even as a secondary motive in voting, because Wisconsin, Ohio, and Michigan all went for Obama in 2012 - I mean, SOMEONE was voting for the black guy. Trump was able to turn out voters who (justifiably) felt that they were getting screwed by the system, and had no voice. You had to squint really hard to think Trump was going to be the guy, but it isn’t like HRC was going to be in your corner - she basically oozed contempt for anyone not in a three piece suit.

"The progressive left absolutely has to make these elections less about race and more about the class warfare that’s being waged. "

“The first step is definitely not calling them racists. They don’t like that, and you don’t get any points for it. It’s pandering to the black vote in the dumbest possible way.”

I think both of those posts are good. I’m spending Christmas in a small town in Wisconsin with family, mix of retired and educators. None of them (to me) have ever referenced even a vaguely racist outlook (except for a boyfriend of my widowed aunt who would be a classic Trump voter in the next election, I’d guess) - I’d think that in terms of political concerns issues of race would lag far behind health care, education, and infrastructure. TBH, there aren’t even any black or brown people to get mad at in the county, except for a Chinese doctor who somehow ended up there and who they all like. They don’t like the Amish, though (long story)

So, we’ll see, I guess.

Haters gonna hate. We can’t get racist Trumpists to stop hating. We can get them to stop hating non-whites by encouraging them to transfer their hate to a different target. The solution is to embrace the rhetoric of class warfare in order to encourage them to hate the 1% and banks and corporations and insurance companies. Democrats should be offering easy explanations of why economic elites are to blame for the problems of the common people. These explanations don’t have to completely accurate; they just have to be easy to understand.

So they don’t mention race, but do any of them think that uncontrolled immigration has brought an epidemic of drugs and violence and MS13 is everywhere and pressing 2 for Spanish is destroying our culture and stealing our jerbs?

See this whole post is super condescending and you should check your privilege when talking about various types of bottom 30% white people (we call ourselves poor white trash… my mom’s entire family is made up of hillbillies so I get to call us that).

These people are poorly educated and constantly targeted by propaganda. They also deeply resent the idea of white privilege, because their lived experience doesn’t involve much privilege at all. Are they privileged vs similarly economically disadvantaged minorities? You bet. That doesn’t mean they don’t live incredibly hard (and short!) lives. They want to hear about someone else having it worse about as much as a man on a life raft in the middle of the pacific wants to hear that he should be grateful that it isn’t a piece of driftwood instead. He’s still dying, knows he’s dying, and is operating in survival mode. He’d stab the man in the water to death with a rusty spoon if it would get the rescuers there sooner. That’s the impulse the oligarchs are exploiting with racism.

Keep people desperate but give them a slightly better lot than someone else and they’ll fight like cornered rats to keep the tiny tattered piece of privilege they have. Divide and conquer works. That’s a big part of why slave owners separated their human property into house slaves and field slaves for example. It doesn’t mean the house slaves weren’t victims too. Telling the victims that they are lucky to have it as good as they do is going to go over really badly.

The people on this forum calling a single mother who works at a McDonalds at a rest stop in bumfuck Egypt in WV/OH/PA/KY/AL/etc a racist because she’s fallen for propaganda about black people and looking down on her is super super gross. The classism inherent in that is really crazy stuff.

I mean, I call lots of rich people racist too.

And this is patronizing.

And it’s also giving up the point to Republicans without any good reason. Trump voters were richer than Clinton voters.
