I hate read it. It’s terrible, of course.
We have a PhD student who’s been struggling with the idea of working in academia. They think that researchers (particularly in the social sciences) aren’t providing anything of real value, and those researchers are often promoted and compensated based on bullshit and nonsense. In contrast, according to this PhD student, the “real world” of private industry is a meritocracy, where you can observe the value of what people produce, and where people are compensated fairly based on that value.
Instead of having an hour-long conversation, I should have just showed them this David Brooks column and given them a Gladwell book.
