In fourth place: seities - Swervedriver – “Deep Seat”
Has a very nice 90’s feel, like if BushX never met Gwen Stefani and decided to value performance over gloss. A nice tempo and grindy feel for a contemplative walk. Any 6 minute song needs to show that it knows what it’s doing and why, and this one certainly does that. The band let’s the track breath and unwind at a nice pace. Never head of them either, so that’s a nice bonus.
I was late to the Tool party. There was a 13-year gap between their last album and this one, and the hype around its release was infectious. My favorite track is “Invincible,” but this is great too. The whole album just screams to be walked to. I have to admit that Keenan isn’t my favorite vocalist, but the rest of the band is amazing. Great pick and an excellent match to the category.
In second place: jalfrezi – The Velvet Underground – “Ocean”
Here’s a band I should know better. Until a couple months ago I had never given them a serious listen. I’m really happy to have fixed that and this track is a great example of why. That little lick at 1:50 legit gave me tingles. 3:10 is fantastic too. Nice one. The first listen got a WTF out of me around 4:15, but the drummer banging away on the toms like a maniac grew on me.
In first place: pauwl – Car Seat Headrest – “Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales”
How dare you. I’ve been waiting for a good spot to submit this. Love it. It’s a great walking song, of course. The Tiny Desk performance of this is a little brutal but this recording is amazing. Good video too. For some reason the lead guy tilts me but probably just because I’m jealous of a young guy killing it. He has a long career ahead.
And that does it for this round! Thanks everyone for submitting. It’s a lot of work to run one of these, but it’s fun work, and I really appreciate everyone’s submissions and participation. Love live walrus, imo!
Searching for a walrus in bridesmaid’s dress gif didn’t return anything. But nice reveal and I really enjoyed listening to these in real time instead of at 7am all at once lol. Thanks
I’ll have to listen to the rest of these later when it clears out some at work but I do dig that first place track, nice choice for the category. I remember hearing it a few times back several years ago but it was out the memory hole at this point, might add it to my regular playlist.
This is a bad beat, I listened to half of the new tool album for 2019 category but ultimately thought the songs I would have picked seemed too long, and the shorter songs weren’t blowing me away. Invincible is a good track.
First of all, another great reveal from Mr Cassette. I agree, Walrus management is hard work but very rewarding.
Glad you liked the Swervedriver track! Supposedly they are part of a genre called “shoegazer” and so that was the final impetus for me to nominate it in the long walk category.
Jafrezi doing some good work ITT with Walrus pics. I feel like that is the real reason you are currently leading this Walrus. That said, I think MimosaDef taking a 2 in this round opened the comp up nicely.
Gonna come back and check out all the tracks (and Kings reveal) a bit later. Off to fire up Fear Inoculum while I get some work done.
So is that it? Was that my whole 15 minutes of fame?
Sigh.
Just got home and digging through these. Good stuff. This (in retrospect) was a harder category than I initially considered. I forgot that there are lots of song paths to take (so to speak) on a long walk. Motivation? Distraction? Introspection? Revelation? Background soundtrack? Etc.
Probably not a coincidence that the lowest scoring songs both referenced long or far walks right in the title. Too Meta!
