As a reminder, here are the categories: #1. A song released in 2019 or 2020. #2. A song for a long walk (doesn’t have to be a long song). #3. A song to listen to at the gym (or to pump you up for a similar occasion). #4. A sad song. #5. A song you liked in high school, and still do now.
First up, old people evaluate the music of The Kids These Days, aka 2019/2020 songs.
In 10th place and one point, mjiggy with Local Natives – “When Am I Gonna Lose You”
This is a really tough type of song to pull off imo. There’s a super fine line to walk here and these guys don’t quite feel authentic to me. A bit FPS. Still, not awful or anything. Just a bit try-hard.
In 9th place and two points, DodgerIrish – The Chemical Brothers – “Got to Keep On”
I feel unequipped to judge this. Is this really boring? Is it hypnotic in a good way? I think I’m supposed to be dancing and not sitting in a quiet room typing. Felt a bit long.
First Walrus first last place finish! Maybe I should’ve gone with the poppier non-acoustic version which gets some radio play but i like this one better.
In 8th place and three points, Smrk4 – Dido – “Give You Up”
A beautiful voice and the backing vocals are nice too. The piano and drums sound a bit like canned samples from a Garage Band pack or something, but she has so consistently done this, and with a big budget, that it is obviously intentional rather than lazy. Not my taste, exactly, but I get why you like this.
In 7th place and four points, Pauwl - Weyes Blood – “Andromeda”
Feels like a poor man’s Lana Del Ray. The singer is obviously talented, and it would be fun to hear her over some more interesting music. The guitar, bass, drums are a bit too upscale elevator music for me. Looking at the rest of your picks, though, I know we share a lot of tastes in common. Maybe I need to give this one a few more listens…the lead guitar does do a couple interesting things here and there.
In 6th place with five points, seities – Slothrust – “Peach”
Another track that surprised me. The first three sections all go in different directions, and not in a bad way. I assume this is an indie band of some sort as the production feels a tad low-budget. But yeah, a solid rock song. I really like the intro riff. Would have liked to hear a bit more of that somewhere along the line.
lol yar there are probably people analyzing google search trends bein’ like “Somethin weird is up with Walrus’s. Brett…BRETT! Buy up any Walrus-related stock NOW! WHY ARE YOU STILL STANDING THERE?!?!”
In 5th place with 6 points - TheDuker – Masked Intruder – “Dream a Little Dream”
A nice riff. I can dig this. I bet these guys play this about 10% faster in front of a crowd and it slays. Minus a couple points because I could never wear a “Masked Intruder” t-shirt.
I mean I didn’t have much hope for myself but you’re telling me microbet made the top 5 with a song from 2019? I sense collusion with microdaughters, J’accuse!
In 4th place and 7 points… beetlejuice - SUPERBODY – CHAMPAGNE
Normally I hate goofy upbeat songs like this, but for some reason listening to this while thinking of beatlejuice fertilizing his plants puts a smile on my face. Includes the start of a nice guitar solo in the middle section. I wish it had gone on a little longer! Still, a nice bouncy track. 5 bags of popcorn.
