Walrus Quickie Reveal Thread!

Podium time!

In a surprise (to me) third place - Jalfrezi – Nilufer Yanya – “In Your Head”

Yeah, I like this. Her accent gives it that something little extra. On my first listen I thought it was maybe a little generic, but I liked it a lot more this morning, so take that for what it’s worth. I’ll try a few more of hers later today.

Fuck me that’s a regal lookin Walrus…

In a surprise (to the thread) second place - microbet – The Good Intentions – “Things Like This”

This is certainly out of my comfort zone, but not in a bad way. My first thought was, “Oh no…” when I heard what sounded like the voice of a top 40 country hick, but this is actually a lot more subtle than that. Nice lyrics and a solid lead guitar line with a nice little solo around the halfway mark (though it does kinda limp into a fade out rather than end in a satisfying manner…). Nice pick!

You shoulda called the shot, Mimosa. I think you know you had a killer track.

In 1st place and 10 points - MimosaDef – Michael Kiwanuka – “You Ain’t the Problem”

Wow. This is great. Returning champ Mimosa with a strong first pick! Is the whole album this good? Those last 20 seconds feel odd. Not quite sure why the song ends the way it does, but otherwise a really phenomenal track. Thanks very much for this. I love it.

Not sure what I would have submitted. If I was submitting with myself as host, probably this:

Man, my time zone means I almost never get a reveal in real time, let alone with a bottle of wine. So fun! My vote goes to @Jalfrezi, but I’m hearing a bunch of cool shit for the first time.

As far as my submission, Kiwanuka is legit, imo, though I haven’t (yet?) found a song on this new album that moves me as much as this one. His Love & Hate album is pretty amazing though.

Looking forward to the rest, even if it’s all downhill from here.

Cool I’m at a poker table and can’t listen to these now, but looking forward to checking out all the entries tomorrow.

You’re a Brit, right? Your and my picks were both on Joolz last year which is really my only lean into contemp music these days.

Nice work, cassette, thanks for doing it.

I thought he lived in Czech Republic but I might be confusing past accounts. Also haven’t been paying attention to these for very long but my impression is that mimosa is some sort of walrus savant.

Naw, I’m from Berkeley, California, and used to DJ at the community radio station KALX. But I’ve been living in Prague for over a decade. Sorta went without much music for a while when I first moved here, but am getting back into it. It’s a very different experience nowadays though. I dug through Spotify for a while for this category. Turns out all my favorite 2019 music was actually from like 2016, lol. Catching up though!

For me this is the sort of stuff I might have in a spotify list to have on while I am working. Something that has a good energy, but won’t pull me out of my thinking. So yeah for me this has a pretty certain time/place. Dodgers may be totally different, just sharing my thoughts.

Yup, that’s fair. I’ll probably stick this one in my “Reading” Spotify playlist.

Yeah, definitely Indie/low budget (which is one of the main reasons I chose this submission). Agree with you re the opening riff being a strength and wish they played with it a bit more :-)

I like a few of these which is unusual for me but I’ve got to say that not one of these sounds unmistakably like late 2010s and several could easily have been recorded any time during the past few decades.

watching this from the sidelines, I have to say I’m impressed there’s no Imagine Dragons ( :face_vomiting:) or Lumineers () on the list

No one else is feeling that micro track? I dunno, maybe I am a hick at heart.

That was one of my likes after a very dodgy intro. Nothing wrong with good country music.
