Going through the instrumentals right now and a few thoughts:
Walrus almighty! 17 entrants is a lot to judge/rank.
Not a knock on Rivaldo for choosing the category at all, but in retrospect Instrumentals does seem like a difficult category to work with. Especially with so many entries to sort.
I really liked the BT track (its the one with the big Electronic OPUS written on it).
Walter Murphy - A fifth of Beethoven was also some good stuff. I see thats where Thicke must have sampled from with their “When I get you alone” track.
I’m going to keep that Gary Moore track in mind for when Microbet runs a music walrus and puts forward a “Music for sexytime” category. *edit to add I guess Tell Overture Final works for this one too lolz
The Galt MacDermot track is pretty groovy. Stands out as something that would be really fun to see live in a piano bar.
That Maceo Plex track was really interesting. I kept getting this didgeridoo vibe
That John Fahey track really caught me off guard. Based on the thumbnail I expected I would be glossing over it pretty quickly. I’m now about to go in for my 3rd listen.
BT’s This Binary Universe (where that track is originally from) is one of the most groundbreaking musical projects of the past 20 years. A musical hill I’m willing to die on.
As I get myself organized, I will remind you that this is Category 6 of the greatest Walrus ever run. British peeps who do the music.
I said this above but it’s worth repeating that I’ve probably had the 3 best categories that we’ve run. There isn’t a truly horrible song in the bunch and the whole things would make a really good playlist. But since I have to rank them, my approach is to award those songs I would want to hear again. The more I wanna replay it, the closer to the top it appears.
Coming in at #17 for one point is @Jalfrezi with Syd Barrett and Late Night
Syd was a real artist and did some of his greatest work as part of Pink Floyd. For me, his psychedelic, experimental rock style misses the mark in this tune. It just doesn’t go anywhere and feels like a never ending intro. It’s a nice tune, but as a composition, is just too out there for me.
