Sorry, I thought you were just saying there are 3 people here.
I wish I could just give the next 5 a tie, but I can’t so I’ll pick this song to be the first off the podium.
I’m a fan of singer songwriters, and this next group are in that vein.
The one that loses out and gets whatever place this is feels more like it belongs in an road trip movie and it’s a song that I already know well and like a lot, but familiarity can be a bad tiebreaker when it’s close, sorry. I thought it’d podium when I first got the songs, but everything else ended up being good, so here we are.
Van Morrison - Into the Mystic
And here is where the other instrumentalist that resubmitted fell with their update.
A good Folk Ballad in the style that I enjoy.
Tara Folk - Nancy Spain
In 6th is what I think is my favorite of this group. Sounds like a Don McLean or similar song.
Pentangle - Lord Franklin
I’ve not listened to a lot of non-english lyric songs in general, but in the Walruses I’ve found a good number of them that I really like. This is one of them, and won’t be the last in this category.
Myrkur - I riden så
Number 4 feels at home in an epic fantasy series and I enjoyed this song a lot. It’s a slow burn, so not for every day, but in the right mood it hits the spot.
Podium Time
But again, I enjoyed this category more than almost any walrus category I’ve done before, so everyone did a good job.
That’s my pick. I’m glad you liked it.
In 3rd is a song that sounds like it was made for an epic tv series. Great mood music and singing. I really like songs that tell a story like this.
Sinéad O’Connor & The Chieftains - The Foggy Dew
In 2nd place, we get some chanting and a song that comes closest to what I envisioned in my head for this category. It feels like it’d be right at home in Vikings or some similar show.
Fever Ray ‘If I Had A Heart’
So first place goes to another non-english song. Not sure what language it is, but it sounds very nice and she has a good voice. Was in first place the whole time.
Herr Mannelig · Garmarna
Thanks for powering through! I somehow got 2nd.
Another podium! Yay for Conor McGregor’s ring walk music.
Wonder if it gets me the podium for walrus
In the end it wasn’t really that close. He lay in wait in mid table for much of proceedings, but with a perfectly timed late run to break the competition Louis cruised over the line to take down a second in a row. We should just all be pleased to be able to witness it, really.
There’s a unsatisfactorily crowded podium, where Pauwl stands alone on the second step but then bob, smrk & cassette crowd together on the third. There’s still only one medal to go round lads, you sort it out!
After nine categories (pre-Joker and dropping scores), I had 43 points. I was just one point out of last place.
Five categories later, I’m tied for a podium spot.
Gotta feel for NBZ. Think he was in last place almost the whole way and his joker was at the bottom of the podium. Brutal.
Finished right in the middle after people were worried earlier that I was going to run away with it.
GG all.
Congrats Louis, Pauwl and the bronze trio.
If there’s one thing I know everyone likes, it’s detailed statistical analysis. Sadly I can’t do that, but I can sort and use background colours in spreadsheets so take a look at this:
Pretty high level but I think I can break it down, it’s just showing where everyone fell on the nodium (red), podium (green) and “Pauwl zone” (white and possibly about to be renamed “Swanky’s house”).
Some observations:
- Cassette and NBZ went podium / nodium the most, only bothering to trouble the pointless middle ground 3 times each.
- As above Swanky showed that keeping your head down isn’t often a path to glory. Though Seities and smrk didn’t do badly out of it.
- Despite Yuv’s (welcome) championing of dropping low scores, he has the highest lowest score. (Though neatly he earned three 3s.)
- Myself, bob and smrk racked up the greatest number of different finishes, though tragically we all fell two short of the full set. Smrk edges it as he got a remarkable 5 - 12 streak!
- Two people loved spots so much they finished there 4 times. Sadly one was NickP and privileging coming last like that was probably a tactical error. Nano had a fascination with the number 8, much more productive.
I guess that’s why they made it the theme song for the show.
Nano got 8 points four times. Though I guess technically one of those might be CM’s category and thus a different place.
