Walrus Grab Bag 4 Reveal

I’ll gladly take my current position and end the Walrus at this point. Very little confidence in any remaining entries.

Watch for me to precipitously tumble down the rankings from here!

I’ve got some sketchy ones coming up. Love me some sketch pads.

Nick and NBZ are bottom and haven’t gone yet. Ouch.

Also one of my two remaining picks is terrible. The other is solid. Let’s see what happens. Not expecting much.

Four rounds left. Those other two must be very forgettable!

Was really hoping not to do that.

So NBZ says this week, and I believe Swanky said this weekend at earliest, but sounds like in the next week or so will be likely for him too.

@smrk4 @Nicholasp27 Do you both think you will be able to do your reveal this week also?

Working on it now as we speak, hope is tomorrow but my track has been not great with deadlines lately.

Alright, we’re looking good. I’ll be good to go tomorrow. I’m thinking either relatively early 1pm EST or maybe a bit later at 6-7pm EST. I think I’d prefer to go earlier at 1pm. LMK if there are any conflicts.

Category host name: smrk4

Category: Song written/recorded/released by the artist(s) when they were 40 and over

Musical tastes: Metal but not the screamy kind. Definitely like lots of pop songs but can’t give you a specific formula. Yes for most rock and blues, but with a preference for good guitarists. I liked quite a few things submitted to pyatnitski’s category from the last grab bag. Some electronic, but not the super dancy stuff. Neutral on rap, punk. Country and folk are not no-hopers but you’d be ice skating up a hill.

Any other judging notes: Turning 40 this year, so show me that it’s not all downhill from here. Maybe this is a chance to submit something from a very popular band from a more recent album they did that I’d have no clue about. Or maybe it’s someone who broke through only after 40; that’d be kinda cool, consider that the challenge, although no bonus points. Let me clarify, does not have to be (probably shouldn’t be) a song about turning 40 or anything like that, this just concerns the age of the artist who wrote/performed the song. Oh yeah, don’t submit Metallica or Megadeth, just because I know all of their stuff.

What I would have submitted:

In the interest of keeping this Walrus competitive you should make sure cassette ends up on the nodium.

In 12th place scoring 1 point: “Weird Al” Yankovic - Word Crimes

Bless you’re heart.

A little unlucky because I do find this song pretty entertaining, but I happen to have heard it way too many times. It did pretty well in the comedy category of another walrus, but it’s not what I was hoping for for this category. Maybe a less well known Weird Al song avoids the nodium, but not much more than that.

Welp, that was quick.

Fortunately my first nodium, so I can drop it.

In 11th place scoring 2 points: Jeff Tweedy - “Love Is The King”

This is probably one of the harsher verdicts I’m going to hand down. This song is apparently well liked, and it’s even on Obama’s playlist. Thanks Obama. Unfortunately, the first time I heard it, it just about put me to sleep (and I was on a run at the time). It’s certainly pleasant and there are sprinkles of nice guitarwork in there, which I always appreciate. But it is way too mellow, and multiple listens didn’t really sway me from that initial impression. I just did not connect with this one.
