I don’t want to be enemies. I know I have some extreme idealist takes.
Years ago people, usually more casual fans of the genre, would often scoff at the notion that Em wasn’t a top MC. It was easy to get labeled as having a hipster take on the matter but that was incredulous to me and seemed like a shortcut to thinking.
It’s all subjective of course but my take is pretty par for the course for aficionados. I still remember when he put Evidence on blast and come on. Evidence was like the next Guru and was a talented beatmaker and once known for his amazing collection of foreign breaks back before everyone and their mama was a producer and when knowledge was a lot tougher to gain and required hard work.
I will say he definitely has some classics and his absolute beatdown on Jermaine Dupri is fricking timeless. Always despised Dupri renaming himself JD after this moniker was already taken by the GOAT producer Jay Dee.
Em and Dre just slaughtered Dupri and the cherry on top was putting Randy Newman’s “Short People” in the track. Good times.
Take it down a notch, y’all. We’re trying to have fun in here.
