Bad Religion - Stranger than Fiction
" The title is self-explanatory. We are living in times that are wayyyyy stranger than fiction, and what better way to express it than through killer punk from one of the godfathers of the genre?"
Review
The song fits well with the world today. The lyrics are appropriate. However…
ARGGGGGGGHHH!!! I heard this song and album way too much growing up. My friend was in love with it and played this song all the time. You had no way of knowing this, so you just lost the familiarity lottery. To be faaaair, I think anybody that was into punk at one point would know it.

Don Henley - Dirty Laundry
“(this version kinda sucks audio-wise and it’s not “official” so Spotify is below if you prefer)”
Dirty Laundry, a song by Don Henley on Spotify
“I think ol’ Don really nailed this one and was ahead of his time back in 1982. One of the reasons we are where we are as a society is the 24/7 news boom. “Got the bubble-headed bleach blond, comes on at 5,” makes me think of Fox News every single time I hear it. WAAF, and there’s plenty of other reasons why, but the bastardization of what used to be a fairly respectable industry is a fairly large reason imo.”

I like the video that goes along with the song. However, this is another song I have heard a billion times. I know the lyrics and can’t place a time when I first heard it. I think this is another one of those American standards that you hear throughout the years.
wow these are great.
They weren’t from Liverpool, but did you ever hear of a band called The Shapes? They got no play over here, but in a strange twist of fate, I met and became friends with their bassist (through skydiving).

The Neighbourhood - R.I.P. to My Youth
"I’m not one for interpreting songs but I think this one is a pretty straightforward anthem for growing up and becoming disillusioned with the world. Perhaps it’s meant to be a younger person’s song but it’s one of the few songs that I listen to that actually makes me feel something on a deeper level. Not sure I’ve heard any song that describes recents events better than:“What do I do, what do I do? I don’t believe it if I don’t have proof. I don’t believe it if I don’t know you. I don’t believe it if it’s on the news or on the Internet.”

The lyrics are good. Pretty dark, but I’m into that. I’m just not into this kind of music. Sorry.
I literally couldn’t think of anything. You gave me a point and moved on. I need a larger library clearly

Company Flow - Help Wanted
" Hard to imagine a more appropriate hip hop beat right now. This interlude/collage of dialogue samples was made pre 97 and is so right on the money in 2020. The “4 million deaths to save the economy” intro sample is chilling."
Review
The dialogue samples were interesting. I’ve heard something very similar to this before that I can’t place. Sounds like stuff from a 60’s science fiction film. Combined with the beat, it just didn’t do it for me as a song. It just felt disjointed. I’m really not a good judge of hip hop beats though.
Yeah I wasn’t expecting much with this entry so I’ll gladly take a reverse bronze.
Pauwl did you like this category more than the last?
I am present but having to rail surreptitiously as on a zoom quiz and dont want to be accused of cheating.

That’s a nasty question. Why don’t you ask Obama if he liked his first 4 years better than his last 4 years as President.

Young Marble Giants - Final Day
" I’m locked at home facing the end of civilisation- this song sums it up for me "
Review
This is nice. Short and sweet. I learned that this band did the original version of “Credit in the Straight World”, which I didn’t know before. This kind of works because it’s short. Any longer and I would get bored. It sounds like palm muting on the clean channel, but then it allows the vocal to get through. This is like the sound of a youth band. This might have to move up a few spots.
Narrator:
I’ve nearly submitted this song to a Walrus countless times, I love it. I think it would have been great in the last round, it’s proper eerie. Galaxie 500 did a great cover too.
Curse in full effect
I am Pauwling this Walrus

Daron Malakian and Scars on Broadway - They Say
"While you aren’t keen on modern rock music, this song does a great job portraying how I feel about the world. Malakian is a former guitarist and vocalist of System of a Down. He split out to create his own band. The lyrics of “They Say” are pretty straightforward in their meaning. We’re all fucked. This might be the most on-the-nose bit
“For we live in sin, for we will win
I watched the president kiss his family
For we live in sin, for we will win
I watched the president fuck society”
I mean this is really the portrayal of the political landscape of the “free” world. It’s all falling apart."
Review
This is a modern hard rock song I guess. Cool video to go with the song. This isn’t the kind of music I normally like but it has cool parts. This gets a bump for the guitar fuckery. I like stuff like that.
This next song took some courage to enter IMO.
This is where the reveal gets a little:

P!nk – Courage
"I don’t listen to a lot of modern pop, but one of the few artists I do actually enjoy is P!nk. I’m big on the importance of lyrics…a song could have the best beat/instrumentation in the world but if the lyrics are stupid or trite, that’s a big fucking turnoff for me. Conversely, great lyrics can make decent songs into classics. I like P!nk because she packs her stuff with messages and meaning, she never downplays emotion, and she can fucking sing.
I, like everyone else, I’m sure, was tempted to choose a song that embodies the “We Are All Fucked” mantra, but I decided to go more personal. This song really speaks to me right now. I think I learned so much about myself and my capabilities over the past year that I know good things will come for me if I can just take the next step and put myself out there."
Review
This is an ok song. Nice lyrics and music. This is an artist I wouldn’t normally give a chance to. It’s nice to learn about modern pop music.
