If you liked Obra Dinn, The Case of the Golden Idol, while not being nearly as good, scratches that same itch. You see a series of scenes where people are being murdered and try to piece together who and what is going on.

I donā€™t think Iā€™d make this argument but I can see it. Honestly surprised you didnā€™t say Rocket League, which I think would be my pick.

Edit: Time for a GOAT video game draft?

I donā€™t think you can compare video games with wildly different objectives like that as the greatest against each other.

Except youā€™re both wrong, itā€™s NHL 94

Hasnā€˜t there already been one?

Portal 2
Xcom 2
ALTTP
Binding if Isaac

I donā€™t even know how Iā€™m supposed to compare old-time masterpieces like X-COM UFO Defense, TIE Fighter, and Half-Life with contemporary masterpieces like Elden Ring, Mass Effect 3, and Path of Exile. In a certain sense, sure, the modern games are ā€œbetter,ā€ but no small part of that is by standing on the shoulders of giants. Thereā€™s also a whole generation of gamers who donā€™t know the wonder of ducking down to somehow fall behind a white block to find a secret zone, or of using a mouse to pan in a full tree dimensions for the very first time it was ever possible. To riff on an idea from Matt above, Iā€™m not sure if I can even really pick between A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and Twilight Princess. All were pretty mindblowing for me.

As a mainly PC gamer through all of those eras, picking one PC game is lol

I actually agree, that was just a rough rough draft idea

Options are way too varied. Iā€™ve spent thousands, and thousands, and thousands of hours playing and watching DOTA 2. Most of the games I play arenā€™t even enjoyable. But the small fraction of back and forth, super competitive matches are so far better than any other gaming experience.

I love Civ 4,5 & 6 as a completely different thing. Same with Skyrim, Red Dead, MGS5, or any other open world game.

Well, Iā€™ve already gotten chuckles on board, but for illustration, Golden Eye, an absolutely iconic N64 game, was released not much before the original Half-Life. Putting Golden Eye in anywhere close to the same league as Half-Life is laughable unless you only played the former or are willing to cut console games a ton of slack. But perhaps hypocritically, Iā€™d think older games deserve some slack compared with newer ones. Subjectivity is tough, nostalgia is a helluva drug, and itā€™s impossible to have played all the games.

So if you say Half Life, do you get CS, CS 1.5, CSGO, DOD, TF, TF2, HL2, etc?

Cuz I could get behind that. Still remember playing HL for the first time.

Another issue I hadnā€™t even begun to consider. I was talking strictly about the original HL and is original multiplayer, which I played the shit out of. HL2 is definitely a different game in my book, but how to carve up the rest of those is tough. Played the ever living shit out of Counter-Strike, too. No idea if it should be counted as its own game or not.

Civ
X-COM
Doom

90ā€™s kids, what up

Valve is uniquely very hard to define if you wanted to do a video game draft. Orange Box is a cheat code if you donā€™t define the rules well.

We did a video game draft on 2p2ā€¦. Iirc Super Mario 3 was the first overall pick

I canā€™t remember the name of the precursor to the orange box, but I remember getting HL1, Opposing Force, Blue Shift, Counter Strike and Team Fortress Classic in a 5 disc bundle for Christmas one year.

I think itā€™s an fascinating and basically impossible question of how you compare games across a wide gulf of technology and genre and nostalgia. I donā€™t even know how I feel about Super Mario Bros. vs. Super Mario 3 (both on the same console!), how do I even begin to judge XCOM2 vs the 90ā€™s XCOM? Pac-Man vs. Overwatch?
