Video Games

they replaced a polished game like 10 years into development (after they said they wouldn’t) with an unfinished beta. I don’t anticipate it going well and I’m not going to play it until I hear it’s amazing, which I doubt I will.

I’m digging Terra Invicta so far. It’s just incredibly complex.

I still have no clue what I’m trying to do. Like I get that you want to control countries - but then what? There are like 20 different options to choose for their priorities. Does it matter what I do?

As far as I can tell, priorities matter for output of resources and stability (ie how easy/ hard it is to hold influence), I have focused on European countries, you can usually get into them easy early on and they pump out a bunch of resources. Income becomes important to buy Orgs for your councilors. I’m like mid way into 2023, and have a pretty stable hold on Several European countries, including Great Britain and now I’m developing tech and running a massive PR campaign in the US to soften it up so I can start taking control of it. Not sure where to go from here. I’m going to try to figure out space exploration, as I’ve developed a bunch of modules that I think I can build in the space stations. Still not sure how to acquire the resources that it takes to maintain them, though.

I’m finding it’s best to play in small doses to avoid getting completely overwhelmed by all the choices. I’m really interested to see just how involved the space aspects of the game get and whether you ever get to a phase where the earth management can be greatly simplified so you can focus on space exploration/conquest. If they don’t simplify aspects, I’m afraid it will just become completely unmanageable.

For sure, I don’t really know what I’m trying to do. I watched a little YouTube primer on your councilors, which really helped me understand their value much better. I’m probably restarted 5 times or so working a little farther into the game each time then going to a point where I realize I missed some critical aspect earlier and starting over again.

Overwatch 2 is out. Currently in queue for 18000 people ahead of me.

No mystery heroes sigh

oops nm its just in a different place

Check the guides i posted a bit upthread, they are really good. In general I don’t think it matters too much besides trying to minmax, although maybe later game not having snowballed correctly early on is bad?

I’m still not 100% sure on the best economic sliders etc for countries besides going full spoils on ones that you don’t plan to use long term; singapore and oil states are great to take early game and spoil as the cash they generate will help fund public relations campaigns in big countries and org acquisition. I’m playing in the EU in my latest game (2025) and boost is an early bottleneck and then later on mission controls are, so i have been focusing on both of those in neighboring EU countries i want to soon unify. I think because the EU countries are already prosperous, high tech, good mil tech etc, you dont need to focus as much on boosting knowledge/welfare/miltech/etc like you would if playing say, india.

Thanks - I’ll take a look.

This month’s Humble Choice has both Deathloop and Monster Train, either of which seem like they easily could’ve headlined a month alone (the rest are kind of crap). As a longtime subscriber I was able to get the whole bundle for $8 (they always offer $4 off if you say you’re going to cancel). Pretty solid value imo.

Also if anyone wants any of the filler games for this month let me know:. a Dark Pictures game, Disciples Liberation which sounds decent, Maid of Sker which is horror, Epic Chef, Railroad corporation and Golf Gang

My current game is furthest i’ve played, I think I am in mid 2025 with a moon colony + mining complex and a mars hab. I have France+Germany+Benelux+Portugal+Italy unified into EU, along with 1 point in kazakhstan, 3 in USA, and 1 in Russia.

I think most important early thing is acquiring boost and denying it to opponents so that you can grab the best spots on the moon and then mars. Skip the early low orbit station, which costs a lot of boost to get up and then to maintain. The resources cost to maintain it get autoconverted from boost or something iirc if you don’t have those actual resources. Its only early purpose is having a few labs which give small bonuses. I assume there is some type of strategy of stacking science modules on multiple stations to then rush critical research to get an advantage but thats far beyond my understanding.

Few other random things i’ve gleaned from guides and a couple playthroughs:

Grabbing Kazakhstan ASAP with the goal of securing its huge boost seems a no brainer starting move ever game, since it only costs 2 CP. I think the best early game play is singapore for money (use full spoils) and Kazakhstan for the boost. Also lets you potentially get into Russia.

Orgs are completely insane and generate a huge part of my economy and research. Getting 25 admin on every counselor is a top priority, which you can do much faster than you think since there are orgs that give admin themselves, allowing you to stack multiple admin orgs. Every admin point also increases your CP cap. Having at least one counselor with government trait is critical to getting those orgs that require government, a lot of which are amazing; lots of good criminal orgs too.

You want a counselor of every attribute type. My first playthrough or two i just got high PER ones since those are the best at public campaigns and controlling nations. However, all the other counselor missions are very important. Eventually all the major countries are controlled, and you need to crackdown->purge to steal enemy points. You also need a councilor that can deal with aliens. You also want councilors that can investigate other councilors and eventually detain/turn/assassinate them. Hostile takeover is also completely insane; in my current playthough I lucked into dude with billionaire trait (huge money income) who had otherwise terrible stats. With his income I was able to acquire a bunch of orgs that boosted admin, quickly getting him to 25 admin and good stats, and then i started stealing every good org from every enemy councilor i could find to outfit all my other councilors.

Classic blizzard server problems on launch day of course. I did play a whole game before getting kicked! Man the UI etc is so much better than beta but 5v5 seems so empty almost at least in the old maps.

I logged in a few minutes after launch and was behind 30,000 people in the queue. Eventually got in and played just fine. I’m 1-0! Played Moira, as usual - Baptiste and I carried.

Didn’t encounter anything asking me to verify my phone number, so fingers crossed that I won’t have any problems.

How does it compare?

I only played the one game so far (and a little bit of the beta) and aside from 5v5, it’s basically the same from a look and feel standpoint. Everything looks and sounds a bit better with the new engine, but it still looks like Overwatch. Menus and UI are a little different, but that’s not a big deal.

The big thing is 5v5 and the hero balancing/changes. The games feel faster paced and more of a free-for-all, since there aren’t two barrier tanks slowly marching the team ahead. In fact, I wasn’t even aware of my team’s tank. We had the two of us healers (one player on the other team used the new healer), Widowmaker, Sojourn, and ???. Didn’t feel like there was much teamwork, although it was probably the first game for everyone, it was quick play, and several players were using new heroes.

But yeah, it still felt like Overwatch, just a bit slicker and faster. I played on the Dorado map, so that was obviously very familiar.

Not loving the new battle pass system, but I understand why Blizzard went to it. When I have more time, I’ll concentrate more on investigating how much of a grind it’s going to be. From what I understand, it is not possible to earn enough in-game coins to buy the battle pass each season. I wish it was like Fortnite, where you can earn enough v-bucks each season to pay for the next season’s battle pass.
