This is one of the things that drew me to Pete…he constantly talked about this, and how the loss of a sense of belonging (especially in regards to the identity we create around our jobs/careers) can lead people to some very dark places if nothing else steps in to fill the gap. It’s one of the reasons how the industrial midwest swung so hard into racism and trumpism…so many people lost their sense of community and belonging when factories moved out or shut down, etc and their communities didn’t step in to fill the gaps in other ways. Populism gave them a sense of belonging.
It’s why getting out of cults is so hard. It’s why speaking up against your own peers in these types of situations is so fucking hard. Sometimes it’s why speaking up against yourself is so hard. I get a lot of shit for not immediately canceling republicans and assuming they are all racist deplorables. But people just want to be part of a group…and Trumpism is a strong, strong pull. It’s why populism works. It’s also why the ones who are changing their views should be welcomed, not condemned. If they find their sense of belonging on our side, then they don’t need to go back to the GOP.
