Stand corrected on French horn not being a woodwind.
Overrated, come on. Compared to who?
ETA: I always thought he played the french horn. That’s pretty embarrassing. I’ve listened to a good bit of Miles. Not sure I’ve studied horns enough to visualize the difference.
Ironically, I will say the saxophone is the easiest to visualize.
Miles was pretty much all trumpet all the time, but he played with French horn players sometimes. He often used a Harmon mute (among others), which isn’t all that common, or at least it wasn’t all that common outside of Miles and his imitators. But another example of a Harmon muted trumpet is in the opening post-piano duet of Black and Tan Fantasy.
As far as overrated, I mean, I give him credit for his creativity and commitment to experimentation with sound and style. There are few if any musicians of any genre or instrument who can match him in that. But he just doesn’t hit me emotionally like Louis Armstrong, Dizzy, Ray Nance, etc., and that’s really damn important in how I appreciate music. I guess I feel like too often he lost focus on something that hits you in favor of something that’s novel, and even his masterpiece, Kind of Blue, is so focused on subtlety that it just doesn’t hit as hard as my other favorite master works.
