I have neither the bandwidth nor the self-esteem to judge a walrus, but I hereby release the following category ideas into the public domain, which will hopefully encourage and inspire future walruses.

  1. A local/regional band that never achieved the worldwide superstardom they deserved
  2. A band whose name takes the form “[Proper Name] and the [Plural Noun]”
  3. A song from 1981
  4. A song whose title includes a geographical location
  5. A song that gets it done in 2:30 or less
  6. A band you like but don’t like to admit you like
  7. A song that tells a story
  8. A song whose lyrics are personally meaningful
  9. An instrumental (from a band that normally includes a singer)
  10. “That doesn’t sound anything like [artist]. I never would have guessed it was [him/her/them].”
