The Television Streaming Thread: Part III

The names are famous enough to recognize but I couldn’t tell you an ounce of plot of them without looking it up.

Is Ozymandias the train episode?

It was the episode 2 episodes before the finale when Walt finally had to get some repercussions

Ban, BAN, BAAAAAAAN!!!

Pretty good list actually.

Only omission is Two Cathedrals from The West Wing.

I think I’ve seen all of these. The titles are descriptive enough except for Breaking Bad, but I’m familiar enough with that episode to know it, Chappelle’s Show, which I assume is the Rick James episode (if you’re not a fan you can still appreciate the master storytelling of Charlie Murphy), and the Wire, but S3 was pretty bad outside of a single episode so I can guess which one that is.

Disagree. The early season timing and the confusion of every character and the anticlimactic suddenness were elite choices that no other show has even attempted.

Recency bias and all, but Severance S1E9 “The We We Are” would definitely be on my list.

And yet it’s not a particularly strong watching experience. It emotionally peaks at “oh wow, they’re doing this?” early on. It’s basically an episode designed to demand objective appreciation and to facilitate this specific argument in its own favor. And I do objectively appreciate the swing and it’s why I do credit it as a good episode overall.

Can’t take it seriously with lost at the top.

That’s a pretty elite episode though.

This is a surprising take. Can’t think of an episode of TV recently I was more riveted too. Add in the degree of difficulty and this seems like an easy addition to the list.

But still, it’s a slightly above mid show. I can’t accept their best episode being the best episode of tv given the competition on its own list.

Agree the show overall is mid. Has very high peaks and very low valleys. Only GoT competes with it for quality variance.

I doubt it would ever make a list like this, but Blue Eye Samurai S1E5 “The tale of Ronin and the Bride” absolutely deserves a top 100 spot.

I can’t take any list seriously that doesn’t have this at the top

Fair enough; I was not riveted, and I felt diminishing returns as it felt like the episode got stuck in a loop. I basically felt like the authenticity of recreating the chaotic moment for these characters - which again, I respected a lot, but in a kind of detached way - came at the expense of any real emotional connection. I felt a lot more locked in by things like the election night episode and the series finale.

Don’t know what is more frightening - the idea that people were still watching Lost into the 4th season or that they buried the greatest episode in the history of television in there.

I’ve seen a bunch of Sopranos episodes mostly in season 1 & 2. I dropped out of the Wire when I realized season 2 was going to be focusing on the dock workers. Breaking Bad is on my list one of these days.

I watch almost no scripted TV. For whatever reason I’m more into stuff that actually happened, and shows like Mythbusters or Expedition Unknown.

I did have a friend pull me through Succession season 1, which I liked. But not enough to continue on my own.

I don’t like it when I’m invested in a show and the characters, and at some point you can tell the writers just ran out of ideas. I feel vindicated every time I see people whining about how much the finale or the last season sucked.

Someone did a side by side and like I thought this shot wouldn’t have made it in 4K. Even in the 1080 it looks like they had to do Viz FX to remove the crew member as he should have been visible when Hamm steps back.

You can skip s2 of the wire if it’s not your thing because s3-5 get back to the cops vs dealers epicness. S2 doesn’t even really have any meaningful continuity moments that can’t be handled with a 5 minute read or recap video.

The episode on this list could be paired with e12 of s3 as an overall 2 episode epic. S3 was definitely peak wire, although it also had a very very high floor.

Frank Sobotka is an all timer. Top5 Wire character arc easily.
