The Television Streaming Thread: Part III

I’m enjoying White Lotus season 3 although it is starting off slow and seems like they are using repetitive themes & adjacent characters from previous seasons.

Just watched open mic episode of Schitt’s Creek. Elite tv! A+.

Has end of High Fidelity vibes.

yeah I think most people don’t realize that this show was literally developed in like 12 minutes because HBO wanted something they could produce quickly and cheaply during the early phases of covid. it’s a disposable show, it’s 100x better than it deserves to be, but it’s not a GOAT contender and doesn’t have the bones to be.

White Lotus season 3 still boring. I feel like part of the reason is that the government of Thailand seems to be using this season as some kind of tourist advertisement.

This is the first White Lotus season I’ve watched and while I’m intrigued, I’m also kind of bored.

Also, I really hope some of these characters get more interesting, because most of them are just douchebags. In Succession, everyone was awful, but at least they were entertainingly awful. I’ve got to think there will be something more with Schwarzenegger’s kid because there is absolutely nothing to his character so far except for being a shitheel. Not even a funny or interesting shitheel.

I would recommend stopping with this season and watching season one first. It’s fun and watching the rest of this season now will diminish your enjoyment of that.

Agree with everything everyone is saying about White Lotus. It’s fine.

I will say I’ve found myself trying to analyze the Goggins/English girl relationship. I actually said to my wife during Episode 3, “She thinks she can fix him.” So I guess I do find them interesting. (or she’s just a gold digger, who knows)

I think they are trying to get us to think not gold digger, but it is not that simple. Does she actually love him? Probably. Would she have even given him a chance if he were poor? Highly doubtful. Would she stay if he became poor? I’m leaning no. I’m sure that kind of thing happens irl too. Need a concise term for it.

Also, someone needs to get her to an orthodontist asap.

it feels like they’ve set it up for a lot of shit to pop off next week, but yeah this is a pretty slow-moving season compared to the previous two.

You’re doing this very wrong. Go back and binge the other two first. They are good. I also suspect knowing what happened in S1 and S2 is going to be valuable in S3.

I also think they help set expectations for S3. I don’t get a lot of these complaints. S3 seems just like the classic WL formula to me. Maybe a touch slower, but they always spend a lot of time building up.

Yeah that was my mostly my thinking. The structure is very well-defined so after having watched the first two seasons the “slowness” of season three is much easier to swallow.

And then yes, there’s also the plot stuff.

had no idea season 3 of Invincible dropped but time to binge

Pretty good season, its a shame the animation is as bad as it is

Gotta have something to do with the quicker turnaround. I guess now that you mention it I noticed a bit of a dip

Thats absolutely the reason, and its a shame. Id wait an extra year for more quality to the animation. For a story as good as they tell, it deserves equal visuals

+1. Super quick and entertaining too. More folks around here should be binging these 7 episodes immediately. At 20 minutes a pop you can get caught up quick on a really good show.

I thought that episode of White Lotus was great. The whole show just cracks me up. Some of the plot this season seems dumb but I just think the overall vibe is hilarious and really well made. It seems like a lot’s gonna happen next week but I liked this week and was giggling for half the show. Also thought the kid—Emily Mortimer’s kid with Dickie Moltisanti—was a really good actor this episode, and I hope Carrie Coon gets more to do.

Also I really like Severance this season. I stay out of the thread because I found out the hard way that I don’t want to get ahead of the show’s plot, I just like watching it. When all you smart guys had me clocking the Helly thing before the reveal, it made me semi-critical of how they were pulling it off, whereas if I’d been watching on my own I think I would have just liked it more. I have fun trying to figure out the themes of shows, but I totally suck at the plots
