Just finished ZeroZeroZero. It’s a bit cold and nasty so it’s not for for everyone (girlfriend stopped watching) but visually it’s amazing, and has interesting almost over-the-top plot. More like watching National Geographic than a typical gangster/narco show.
Signed up for a Cinemax trial yesterday and this is dollar for dollar an elite catalog. Almost every movie they have is good and some are Great. Lots of good TV and documentaries. Worth a trial at least. Skinemax has come so far!
Top picks (ymmv):
Ocean’s 8
Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Do not watch MMMM tho unless you are ready to feel uncomfortable.
Cinemax also has Banshee which is awesome, that old time surgeon/doctor show with Clive Owen was pretty cool too
Go here and compare features and prices - they do great testing on contrast ratios, brightness, color accuracy, lag time, etc. It’s the only resource you need: https://www.rtings.com/
I bought a TCL 6-series 55” a few months ago and it’s pretty outstanding for the price. The current version is $550 at Best Buy right now, or you can get last years model for $450 at Walmart. I’m not sure there’s a huge difference between the two tbh.
If you’re looking for an affordable but still high quality screen, I think you’re mostly looking at Vizio, TCL, or Hisense. But most of the models those brands produce are kind of shitty, so you need to make sure you’re buying a model with a good screen. From what I’ve seen, the stuff in the 500-800 dollar range from Samsung/LG/Sony/etc are all entry level models with way worse screens than the stuff you get from the brands I mentioned in that same price point.
I can’t help much with headphones or sound bars. I’ve got a 100 dollar Vizio sound bar with a little subwoofer I got from target a few years ago that works fine, but I’m not the kind of person to crank up volume and really get immersed in explosions and whatnot.
We got a Samsung 120hz 55 inch at Costco for $350. Yeah, its last year’s model but that is why buying Tvs in Jan-Mar is such a better option. Not enough changes in next years model to justify a $250 price increase
Anybody here see Pi?
It’s one of my all-time favorite movies. It’s on Amazon Prime until March 31st. If you have an account or want to sign up for a 30 day trial, it’s free.
Here’s the official trailer
Anyway, just saw the latest episode of Better Call Saul and shit’s ramping up. Can’t imagine there not being a sixth season. This show is amazing.
Kim is really out of her mind. She’s clearly too morally conflicted to be a lawyer and now she’s proposing a marriage to Jimmy solely so they don’t have to testify against each other if Jimmy gets caught fucking up.
Fan of Darren’s other movies? I enjoyed Pi but it is my least favorite of his.
I haven’t seen every one of them but the ones I’ve seen (Pi, Black Swan, Requiem for a Dream, and The Wrestler) are fantastic.
My ranking:
- Requiem for a Dream
- Pi
- The Wrestler
- Black Swan
Black Swan reminded way too much of Perfect Blue which isn’t bad since Perfect Blue was also fantastic but it still made it less appealing . The Wrestler has nostalgic value as I was a huge fan of professional wrestling as a kid (and as a teenager during the Attitude era).
Watched “Michael Clayton” last night (free with Cinemax subscription) which goes pretty well with the current realization that the wealthy don’t care about you, even if you’re friendly with them or make them a lot of money.
Oof yes Requiem is incredible.
You must watch The Fountain next. It is on Cinemax. As Jerry said, get a free trial if you don’t have it. I think you will like it.
The Knick
YouTube Tv just started offering 30 day trial of Epix.
Slow Burn and War of the Worlds
Is there anything in particular you like on their service?
We have a 55" TCL as well. Can’t really beat the bang for the buck. Had it for about a year and a half now and we’re super happy. Also we use a Sonos Beam as the soundbar with a couple Sonos 1s for surround. Solid relatively inexpensive setup.
Also Season 3 of Ozark out today on Netflix for anyone interested.
You guys are crazy, OLED is the biggest thing since 1080p imo, don’t get a tv that doesn’t have it. That includes knock offs like “QLED”.
Can you get a decent sized OLED for less than $2k yet?
I’m pretty happy with my 14" laptop. Does the trick.
On epix or YouTube tv?
I just looked through their series and those two stood out to me, so I am going to check it out.
