I’ve been watching “The English Game” on Netflix, which is sort of about the evolution of soccer in the 1850s-ish? It’s kinda like a downton abbey sports edition and it’s something both the gf and I enjoy.
I am very interested in the foreign horror anthology Bloodride on Netflix. Next Party? Each episode is about half an hour. We could watch one a day so we have a tiny event more people can take a break to participate in without having to give up several hours. With of course full movie Parties still happening otherwise.
I recently cut the cord and am only paying $6/mth (actually $0 as first mth is free) for Hulu. Has more than enough content for me. Was considering $50/mth for YouTube TV but waste of money right now as 90% of its value to me is live sports.
Agree agree. I love anthologies like this in general. Usually some gems and some turds, but the episodes are short enough that it doesn’t break the wheel if one or two suck. And with a show like this, it’s usually worth watching at least once to experience each episode’s unique premise.
I support anyone who would like to do this, but I am not caught up on the new season. Only saw the premiere on AMC but was unable to watch ep2 so have left it alone until it’s on Netflix.
I was underwhelmed with The Platform. It would have made an excellent Black Mirror / Twilight Zone episode, but there’s just not enough material there to sustain an entire feature-length film. It sort of reminded me of Cube, only cube wasn’t afraid to lean into the inherent nihilism of its premise.
I should watch Cube again, that was an excellent stoner movie.
Cube had a premise that was fundamentally absurdist and surreal and the movie wasn’t afraid to run with it because the producers had nothing to lose. The Platform kinda wanted to be a parable about late-stage capitalism but parables really work best as short stories. I will try to watch Cube with you guys if I can, that is some A+ Kafkaesque shit.
Why aren’t people making half-hour feature films, by the way? With streaming there’s no need to stick with the usual 1.5-2 hour formula. The Irishman is certainly pushing the envelope one way, why not make a feature film that’s 30-45 minutes?
I definitely consider Cube to be one of the most unique and best executed films out there. I probably won’t make the watch party, but may watch it again soon on my own time.
That is a good point. I would say with the plethora of anthology series that we are essentially already moving in that direction, eg Black Mirror, In the Dark, Twilight Zone, Bloodride, Modern Love.
