The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

Not even the Zillow porn one? Maybe it’s because I was literally doing that at the time, but it got me good.

“Seems like im the only one who cant go into the office.”

Motherfucker, you are LITERALLY in your office

Succession is so god damn good.

Starting watching Inside Job on Netflix.

Basically a mix of Rick and Morty and American Dad

I needed something to have on while working out so I watched the last season of Shameless. Shameless has been terrible for many years at this point, after having been really really good earlier in its life. The final season is as bad as you’d expect under these circumstances, maybe a little worse. Someone seems to have told the writers “tragedy + time = comedy”, but some of them heard it as “time/comedy = tragedy”, or “tragedy x comedy = time”.

Some specific gripes/observations:

  • Introducing a new, seemingly important character in the penultimate episode (Debbie’s new girlfriend) was a bold choice, Cotton. It did not pay off.

  • I wonder how much they offered Emmy Rossum to return for the final episode?

  • Maybe part of this comes from the fact that I’m a recovered alcoholic, but I couldn’t believe they didn’t make more of Lip falling off the wagon. Especially with everything else in his life falling apart, it seems like that narrative would have written itself.

  • I will admit to having a little nostalgia over Frank’s deathbed flashbacks, if only because it reminded me of how damn good that show once was.

I think it’s possible she just didn’t want to do it at all. She’s the one who decided to leave the show, and I think there was always some bad blood after the Macy/salary stuff. But the COVID explanation is BS imo.

Just Googled about her and the actress who played Debbie talked a little shit about Rossum recently: ‘Shameless’ Star Emma Kenney On Emmy Rossum Exit From Showtime Series – Deadline

This post is kinda bizarre bc I just finished the last season a few days ago, figured I was literally the last person on the planet to hate-watch the final season, and was just too ashamed to post anything about it. It had been sitting on my DVR for months just staring at me. Good to know I had company.

Your spoilers are spot on. I’ll add that the only thing worse than Debbie and Carl’s storylines was their acting. And as per usual so many of the other arcs had so much potential like the Frank dementia thing and Kev selling the bar but ended up nowhere.

And regarding Emmy:

I’m going to choose to believe that they were planning on her coming back bc that entire storyline with the developer buying the buildings had her name written all over it. She was going to swoop in as the neighborhood savior, Lip would be the gc because of all the skills he developed while renovating the other carpy houses he was living in, and they’d all live happily ever after, once they buried Frank.

That’s one of the tricky things about TV shows with kids - if they turn out to be long-running, you just have to hope that the kids turn into good actors, because it’s tough to tell when they’re little. Honestly I feel the same about Ian, but apparently people like him because he does have a bunch of other stuff going on.

Ian is Sir Laurence Olivier by comparison imo. I find it hard to believe that two people who literally grew up in the profession couldn’t find the help necessary to make them the least bit believable. They practically whined out every line of dialogue. The show was just so Debbie-centered the last couple of seasons too, it made impossible to ignore. I’m so glad it’s over.

In a good way?

Not in my experience

I like both of those shows, but I wasn’t impressed with the Inside Job trailer. So that’s disappointing but not surprising.

Took dlk9s jr shopping for a Bar Mitzvah suit over the weekend. We saw this shirt and before he saw the price, he said: “Look how complicated the pattern is. I bet it’s REALLY expensive.”
