The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

3 > 5 > 4 > 2 > 1

I won’t argue with anyone who likes 4 more but I don’t think it had the narrative propulsion* of 3 and 5.

(* - once again, The Shield is the undisputed GOAT in this regard)

Justified, Party Down, and Veronica Mars are missing from this list.

Gunther has died.

R.I.P. and may you finally get Rachel in the afterlife.

Rachel died too?

Anyone else watching Dopesick?

Feels like a mini-series that UP would be into.

Finished Squid Game the other day. I won’t rehash everything, but a few quick comments:

  1. I think this was mentioned ITT, but those VIPs were cringy as hell. I’d really like to know if their acting was supposed to be that shitty for effect, or if it really was that shitty. There was no need to feature them as much as they did for an episode or two.

  2. It kind of bothers me how mainstream this show has gotten. I don’t say that in a hipster “I liked Squid Game before it was popular” way, but more in a “it’s disturbing how this ultra-violent show is embraced by everybody.” I mean, shit, during a college football game, they used a Squid Game-like graphic to show how teams in the conference were dropping out of the conference title competition. I mean, I loved the show, but there’s something about how its permeated everything that’s disturbing.

  3. I also kind of hope they don’t do another season. Feels like it would either be a) the main character goes on a hunt for the people still behind the game, so it’s not even really “Squid Game” anymore, or b) he goes an plays it again, which would be dumb.

Had the same thoughts as your 2,3.

I dunno about y’all but all my kids that use the internet and are younger 12/10/9, know what it is and what it’s about, it’s all over Roblox and YouTube in different ways. Not great and I don’t recall anything else like it.

And agreed on I hope they don’t do a season 2. Hard pass on that for me. Even being “rich” it’s not like he would have any clue about how to go about doing anything, he’s not Jason Bourne.

Second squid game event wouldn’t have the same feel.

I watched it with my 12-year-old (dlk9s jr), so I suppose I’m ok with him seeing that stuff. My 14-year-old watched it on her own before the rest of us did. I actually didn’t realize how violent it was going to be. dlk9s jr isn’t scared by any of that stuff, but I think he got choked up during the marbles episode. I’ve tried to keep them away realistic, extreme, visceral violence (like, say, John Wick, as opposed to The Thing), but I guess that’s out the window now.

squid game is like if wes anderson didn’t grow up rich

My son actually told me yesterday that he’s a little bit ashamed that he knows so much about weapons from playing video games.

Re: 3

I guess I’d be fine if they wanted to do a season 2 with a whole new group, or even a prequel about cop’s bro going thru his season and rise to power.

Anything else and I agree that it will probably be lame. Same dude going thru another season seems weird, and main dude going on a hunt wouldn’t even be the same show, and would probably require different creators anyway in order for it to be decent.

Yeah a continuation of the main character hunting the people running the games smacks of Handmaid’s Tale s2 onwards. I can’t imagine it being very good.

Watched the first 2 episodes of I Think You Should Leave. Don’t think I laughed at any skit that involved the main guy, he sucks. Felt like I was watching a bunch of R rated reject SNL skits.

There’s a reason they feel like rejected SNL sketches, certainly.

I can’t help you with the other thing.

he’s one more mental break from running for president. the thinking man’s kanye.

Colin Robinson playing poker is unbelievably good.

Why are the seasons so damn short though? Worst thing about this show is there are only 30 short episodes so far.

basically every show is like this now. I cannot remember the last comedy I saw that had more than 12 episodes in a season. I think NBC comedies in the early 2010s were still doing ~23 eps when they had parks/rec, the office etc?

I cant remember the last SNL sketch I rewatched or wanted to rewatch. Maybe one or two of the recent Mulaney hosting ones have been funny?
