Don’t know about directly or the specific details, but the Korean government is aggressive about promoting its pop culture to the world while the Japanese government is not, resulting, IMO, a missed opportunity for Japan.
It does feel a lot like the 90’s when weird nerds cultivated an interest in Japanese culture via stuff like anime, videogames, manga, jpop, jhorror, etc. Only this time it’s Korea’s turn in the barrel.

Indeed. I first landed on Japanese soil in the mid-90s with zero interest in (or even awareness of) otaku culture. The subsequent wave of Japanese visitors came almost entirely from there.
Speaking of which, if you want to get a glimpse of the kind of people who visit and live in Japan from abroad and the kind of things they are into, there’s a long-running show on Netflix I recommend called Why Did You Come to Japan?

I’m sure many of them are, but it’s a G-rated show, so I’m afraid you won’t find any such content.
I don’t know anything about Cowboy Bebop except that people love it. I’m sure lots of fans will hate this because it’s new and live action, but as someone with no experience with the show, this looks cool as shit:
