The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

I was like 7 or 8 when Star Wars came out. All I knew about it was it was about space. Even at that young age I did not like science fiction so I went in with very low expectations and sort of didn’t want to even go.

But I did love it. And for those here younger than us I can’t overstate how crazy star wars mania became back then. People were going to see it ten, twenty, thirty times. It absolutely captivated the public’s attention at the time.

I am not sure that anything since had that kind of impact, but I could be wrong.

i wish it was more popular because there are so many times i want to react with a gif of them dancing around with $10 saying “unforeseen riches!” but it’s just not big enough yet i guess

I have heard the hype for WWDITS and decided it made sense to start with the movie.

I couldn’t ever get into it, which is not unusual for me. Plenty of stuff I later loved I couldn’t latch on to initially. Maybe I will try again or skip to the series.

i can’t watch any movie anymore. if it doesn’t have an 8-hour+ story arc why should i even get into it?

This is pretty much me exactly

i watched one episode of midnight diner. probably something i could watch on my commute.

are you talking about Samurai Gourmet? that’s another one netflix keeps micro-targeting me towards.

No, that’s yet another, but the Solitary Gourmet is, as far as I know, the original of this genre.

I really enjoyed the 1st couple of seasons. Got me through a couple early pandemic weeks.
The final season made for netflix was lesser, but still worth watching.

There’s also a movie, though not sure if it’s available in the U.S.

Holy shit, WWDITS is freaking incredible. Just watched the pilot and it seems like it’s basically The Office w/vampires. It’s tough to make me actually lol and this show accomplished that feat no fewer than 10x in a half hour.

Probably not for everyone, but if you love The Office then I’d say it’s an obligatory watch.

So I’ve been doing movie night every week for a while with friend and his wife. The overriding theme for the past few years has been documentaries. But for this October we have moved to horror films…

So dude allowed me to select What We do In The Shadows movie even though he had seen it before.

Wild to see a what we do in the shadows push in this past week when I finally got started on it…

Weird show…it takes the right feeling coming into watching it…but show has had me laughing harder this past week than any show in recent memory

Lol I’ve become the opposite the last few years, so many TV drama series seem to have a movie-length plot padded out to 8-10 hours. At least a movie tells a whole story in 90-120 minutes!

We delayed watching the series for a while because my wife wanted to see the movie first, and I don’t really remember much about the movie, but the series has been a pleasant surprise-- quite a bit funnier than I was expecting. Colin Robinson, man, that’s one of the funniest TV characters I’ve seen in a while.

Ill always think of him as the dude woth the baseball cards from Better Call Saul, but he is a tremendously talented type actor

Yeah, I feel the same way. Modern TV encourages shows to load up on filler and go on unnecessary subplots. Squid Game was great, but that could have easily been a 1-hour Black Mirror episode.

Have you guys seen Oats Studios on Netflix? It’s basically a series of extremely well-done short films that do the opposite thing.

Yet another sports scandal docuseries on Netflix: “Bad Sport”. Have only watched the first episode but I can conclude the whole thing will be worth watching. First ep focuses on the ASU point-shaving scandal, which I remember but never really knew the full details.

Does The IT Crowd ever get good? The first three episodes pretty much sucked.

I was hoping for something great, and all I’ve seen so far is something marginally better than The Big Bang Theory.

i’m rewatching on cinema at the cinema and s11e9 “the on cinema debt forgiveness special” hits harder than the game of thrones red wedding for me

masterful worldbuilding and hilarious show. if you haven’t watched it here’s the first 8 seasons

Squid Game Questions:

  1. Did Player One actually put himself in jeopardy in the tug of war game? In the other games it’s easy to see how they could just not kill him and not have anyone know. But I don’t see how they would have done it in tug of war.

  2. Did we ever figure out how/why the copbro became the Front Man?

  3. How long was copbro missing? In the records it looks like he won several years earlier. But it looks like the cop only started looking for him fairly recently. And if it was years, then why hadn’t the cop stopped by copbro’s place earlier?

  4. It seems like the VIP who tries to get the cop to blow him just returns to watch the final squid game like nothing happpened. Really? After he gets knocked out by the cop and presumably spills everything?

I actually noticed in real time, but I chalked it up to careless camera work/directing. It’s also difficult to discern what constitutes moving in that game. There are a lot of people who flinch a bit who don’t get shot and some who do.

I was suspicious of Player one being the potential mastermind when he happens to meet 456 outside the convenience store. Just seemed too coincidental. As I mentioned to my wife, “I’m getting a real Keyser Soze vibe from this guy”.
