The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

2nd season of Solar Opposites drops on Friday.

Looking forward to it.

Money Heist was okay, but I’m a sucker for heist movies.

Series finale is tomorrow night. (I can try recommending a few shows if you need something new, particularly sitcoms, although I don’t really know what you like.)

Same; was very pleasantly surprised by season 1. Like an inverse Rick and Morty that didn’t waste time handwringing about toxicity.

Probably 5 million people.

Solar opposites would be better if they got rid of all the aliens.

Has anyone tried to watch Debris? It’s a sci-fi show with a unique and interesting concept so I figured I’d give it a chance. Leave it to network TV to take a cool concept and then water it down so that each episode is a boring story with maybe 2 minutes of airtime given to the idea of some sort of broader multi-episode narrative. I want to like it but this show probably isn’t going to make it. They should probably leave stuff like this to the streaming services and just stick to Law & Order or NCIS retreads.

The Last Blockbuster is a pretty funny and nostalgic documentary about one of the last Blockbuster stores.

Barely made it through ep1. Not going back.
This described my recent views of Debris, The One, Maniac, MCU, a bunch of other crap.

Peaky Blinders made it to the lineup. On ep 5.
Might give Falcon and Winter guy a 2nd episode.

I just watched Superstore. I did enjoy it but felt it would have been better if I hadn’t binge watched it. I did take a break to watch a mini series though. Some of the characters were a bit much watching episode after episode. I also didn’t particularly enjoy the main character. My favourite character was the pharmacist, he cracked me up.

A recurring beef I have with modern television is that every show now gets bloated and laden with filler because they’re expected to fill multiple 8-15 hour seasons. No one does tight storytelling anymore. The Paper Heist concept could have been an incredible 2-hour movie that would be Spain’s answer to Heat, but instead we get this long meandering thing.

I think a lot of classic BBC dramas like House of Cards or I, Claudius got it right by deciding ahead of time to be a limited miniseries with a defined sense of direction. You can’t do that any more, every show has to leave an opening for a season 2. How amazing would the US version of House of Cards been if they’d just kept it to 1-2 seasons?

No joke I had been watching Superstore on hulu past month and just got done with 2nd to last episode 2 days ago. I was legit wondering what happened without realizing the finale was yesterday

Well, it’s still tonight, at least technically where I am. Haven’t watched it yet.

Yeah, Jonah can be kind of annoying and the will-they-won’t-they wasn’t my favorite. I do think they lean more into just making fun of him as the series goes though.

Tate is funny, but my favorite has to be Marcus, just the most earnest dumbass around. Bo is also great whenever he shows up.

It was actually Amy that I wasn’t too keen on.

Haha, well, that’s also understandable. I got pretty tired of how often her plot amounted to “Amy tries to prove something about her is not true to everyone, who already knows it is true.” Oddly, I thought season 6 slipped a bit, but I don’t think it was because of her departure-- there were just a few too many stories that stretched plausibility for me and ended up not being funny as a result.

One of the funniest comments someone I know made was about the Amy/Jonah/Kelly love triangle: “So he dumped the pretty, bubbly, sweet blonde for the lady with a kid who’s always mean to him?”

Haha, yeah, that Olympics episode is really kind of out of the timeline with the rest-- I think it was a special they aired over the summer? The more “proper” season 2 premiere addresses the season 1 finale.

Yeah, it aired over the summer. According to Wikipedia, the Olympics episode canonically takes place “sometime in the middle of season 1.” I imagine that’s not much help when you’re just going in order on Hulu to catch up.

Superstore finale was quite good. One of the more satisfying comedy finales I’ve seen. Great show that seemed to have the best background extra roles of all time.
