The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

Are you old enough to remember Enron? Ma Bell?

Both. Ma Bell basically was a giant state owned enterprise, except that it was a mega profitable private monopoly.

The world over there are plenty of giant state owned enterprises and the vast majority are 4 alarm trash fires. Thatā€™s not propaganda, thatā€™s reality. Iā€™m not trying to defend giant monopolies of any stripe, they all seem to suck pretty hard. Thatā€™s why I tend to think the solution is breaking them up rather than making them into huge public companies.

Breaking up Twitter would defeat the whole point of social media. Itā€™s exactly the sort of problem public utilities are designed to solve.

I think twitter is fine. Facebook and Google are not. The fact that both have widely known ā€˜killzonesā€™ that startups are well advised to avoid is also not OK.

Thereā€™s no world where itā€™s OK for Facebook to own Instagram and Whatsapp or make additional acquisitions in their own space.

Given the fast-moving pace of change in the tech world, perhaps Facebook can be made to wither into a more manageable size simply by not allowing the next transaction analogous to buying Instagram or Whatsapp and you donā€™t need to figure out how to break the company up.

No you definitely make them cough up Instagram and Whatsappā€¦ and you make Google cough up Adsense and Youtube. You also put a bunch of regulations about data sharing in place.

If Twitter was a public utility it would have to permit all speech protected by the first amendment. Seems good to me but I imagine others here would disagree.

Whatā€™s disā€¦ Twitter thread, Urggg

as long as we had an easy way to ignore bad actors, I think itā€™d be ok

Typical academy. The only reason he lost was because academy decided it was finally time for Pacino to win.

Finally got around to watching Rome on Amazon Prime and its been killer so far. Especially after I just re-listened to Dan Carlins Death throes of the Republican which is amazing.

Obviously Julius Caesar was an evil man but I canā€™t help but admire how much of an incredible bad ass he was. Probably the most impressive person in human history. Also he did gain power through advocating for the common man and own the shit out of the oligarchs. Also showed great clemency with his enemies. So he was basically a progressive for his time period

One of these things is not like the others

Octavian was also quite impressive. He, uh, did not have the same instinct for clemency for his foes as Caesar did. Although to be fair he wasnā€™t assassinated by a mob of his pardoned enemies like his uncle was.

Octavian was right.

Idk if I would say the Watchmen movie was fresh at all. It was basically TDK with a better intro but worse rest of the movie. Snyder clearly empathized with Rorsach, which ruins the entire vibe of the comic.

The watchmen movie is absolute trash and it contains the single worst sex scene ever caught on film. Itā€™s a crime against cinema and the graphic novel.

People who claim to love the Watchmen graphic novel and the movie are like Tarantino ā€œfansā€ who claim Jackie Brown is his best movie.

Jackie Brown is actually my favorite QT, so this checks out.
