Return to Oz is arguably better than the Judy Garland masterpiece. It isn’t nearly as significant to the history of cinema, but as a movie, I’d watch RtO before WoO anytime.
This is the one movie they can endlessly remake and never get wrong :P
The originals Ghostbusters movies suck. There, I said it. The first one is just okay and the second one is Not Good.
The real mojo was in the cartoon and toys.
Here are some remakes that are unquestionably better than the originals. I will die on these hills.
The Count of Monte Cristo (2002)
Heat
The Last of the Mohicans
The Thing
12 Monkeys
IT: Chapter 1 and 2
City of Angels
You’ve Got Mail
And here are a bunch I claim are better than the originals but YMMV.
Little Shop of Horrors
The Departed
Fright Night
Vanilla Sky
Homeward Bound
The Fly
Insomnia
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
The Crazies
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
Little Women
Jane Eyre
The End of the Affair
Angels in the Outfield
The Birdcage
Brewster’s Millions
Death Wish (2018)
Father of the Bride
Fun with Dick and Jane
Major Payne
The Man in the Iron Mask (1998)
Meet Joe Black
Quarantine
Red Dragon
The Thirteenth Floor
You might be right but I haven’t seen a single complete pair of those originals/remakes besides Red Dragon. And the remake was pretty good and not pointless but I liked the Peterson/Mann version better.
You’ll get your wish about those hills if you persist with this one!! The Shop Around the Corner is spectacular. (Assume you mean that and not the Hungarian play that kicked it all off, and whose existence I just learnt of.)
Yeah, that really sucks. Unfortunately, I still don’t think that streaming services are a great option for weekly released shows yet. People are too into streaming services providing that bingeability, that anything with a weekly release schedule that goes on too long. Contrast this and the Joel McHale show (obv not on the same quality level) with something like Married at First Sight or The Circle which have limited weekly runs and can hold their audience for a month to 6 weeks. Or to weekly release news shows on a premium network like Last Week Tonight and Real Time on HBO. Long term, weekly programming still doesn’t seem to have a fit in streaming right now.
It’s funny because I find myself getting impatient with HBO for not dumping entire seasons on my head at once because I’ve come to expect it thanks to Netflix. I think appointment television still has its place though (says the old Gen Xer)
I mean, it does, but HBO is setting themselves up for a fall in this regard when it comes to releasing their own streaming service.
Obviously its the profitable play now, but people are going to start expecting full seasons dropping at once.
Speaking of HBO Max, anybody have any reviews on the Harley Quinn show? I really dig the artwork, and have found her to be a fairly interesting character throughout the years (especially in animation/video games)
But like, with Real Time or LWT those shows are topical newsy shows, they pretty much have to be weekly, or no more than daily. Whereas Perry Mason and I’ll Be Gone in the Dark were already in the can so it’s stupid to make me wait for those (unless you’re just milking me for subscription manie$).
Harley Quinn is pretty good, I’ve seen it all. A fun take on DCU and best characterization of her yet. Can’t say the romantic angle really worked out but at least they tried. Worth a watch.
