The Television Streaming Thread: Now With Felonies

Here’s to swimmin’ with bow-legged women.

watched the original mad max and both of the sequels as well the other day, mad max is on netflix, other two on HBO max. Road Warrior is the best one and the one i remember. Original is trash and the 3rd is only good for the Thunderdome part, the rest is trash.

edit: Fury Road GOAT obv

This movie is so so so good. I know it’s boring for a while but just wait until they’re on the mission and shit starts to go wrong. I feel fortunate to have seen this one in a student theater.

Also recommend the sequel. It’s an entirely different animal and arguably retcons the best parts of the first movie, but it is fascinating if taken as its own story.

Deep Blue Sea also GOAT

Shaw was really terrific. One of the best Bond villains of all time, Jaws as mentioned, was also great in the Sting. He was a skilled Shakespearean stage actor and it shows even in his lighter roles.

Also, the original The Taking Of Pelham 123 was a brilliant performance.

The recent Pelham remake joins the ranks of Ghostbusters, Manchurian Candidate, and Robocop as pointless remakes of perfect movies.

That’s always my assumption and I never bother with remakes.

To that list I can add Psycho (the very epitome of pointless film-making, this was a frame by frame remake lol) and Night Of The Hunter.

I did watch the remake of Manchurian Candidate and it was pretty good, actually. But of course not as good as the original. Better to do a soft remake and title it something different. Haven’t seen the other three because, come on, why bother.

Remake better than the original where you’ve actually seen both? All I got is Casino Royale, referring to the most recent and the very first, which few even know exists. It’s not terrible, for what it is. Anything with Peter Lorre has some merit imo.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Really? If the remake’s better than the Alec Guinness original I watched on TV in the 70s I’m in.

True Grit? Ocean’s 11?

Has anyone seen both the original Howard Hawks Scarface movie and the Brian De Palma remake?

Then, there are movies like The Wizard of Oz or The Star Is Born which have been told many times, but where the iconic version isn’t the earliest. Hollywood does remakes because it’s always done remakes.

I’m going to say that the new iteration of Ghostbusters was a flawed attempt that could have been non-pointless. And that a bunch of misogynist fanboys being shook might mean it wasn’t compleptely pointless.

I enjoyed the most recent Ghostbusters. If the originals didn’t exist, it would have been better received and of course, you had the stupid misogynists who couldn’t fathom women getting fun roles.

It was certainly a bit pointless, effectively rebooting the franchise with a story that was less compelling. They really needed to link it to the originals like they are doing with the upcoming movie.

I’ve never seen any of those originals. Like I’m sure the version of The Maltese Falcon I’ve seen is the best one, but I’m not about to spend time watching the first one to confirm it.

True Grit remake is inarguably better than the original.

It’s not.

I did find that a little hard to believe.
