Finished The End of the Fxxxing World last night and want to strongly recommend.
On the surface itās about the adventures of 2 angsty English teenagers. James (who thinks he might be a psychopath) and Alyssa (who has decided to be his gf) are struggling to understand their place in a world where they have been let down by those who ultimately matter the most. While the protagonists are kids, this is not a childrenās show. It is what the word ādramedyā was created for.
Episodes run between 19 and 23 minutes but each is packed with a whirlwind of emotion and wonder and are without ever a wasted scene. They are simultaneously hilarious and horrific and gut wrenching and joyful. This is a great Fxxxing show.
Awww shit. Disney+ has Return To Oz. If you want to absolutely fuck with your young childrenās brains, make them watch this movie. Itās like 2019 and weāre all supposed to have our minds blown by a dark Joker movie, but in 1985 Disney came at us Gen-Xers with a grimdark Wizard of Oz. Itās like, what if Wizard of Oz but after the apocalypse, thatās what my generation grew up watching.
My pro-tip is that the primo, extra nasty dank Disney shit can be found in the Disney Through The Decades section from 1960 to 1980. Everything from Herbie The Love Bug to The Black Hole to Mr. Boogedy to Return To Oz, there are some extremely choice garbage movies hiding out there in the back recesses of the Disney vaults.
Iāll have to check that out for sure. I have these weird broken memories of people wandering around Oz while itās this flooded, gray mess and I had no idea where those came from until now.
Finished it today. Laughed really hard at the rattlesnake. The Helen/Noah stuff was OK, everything else was just so so bad. The dude Future Sad Lady was banging was just lol wtf terrible. Like even worse than her somehow. Pretty bummed no one murdered Murder PTSD Marine, but hey he was the only character besides Noah and Helen that was remotely entertaining. So whatever I guess.
The ending scene I had to fast forward from embarrassment. Jesus christ.
I really canāt believe that a group of writers actually thought that was a good idea. And the first season or two of that show was just written so well.
Furkat was underused imo.
Guess Disney+ correctly figured that Stars Wars nerds would try to bonus whore the Mandalorian (free trial is only 7 days and they release episodes week by week with only 2 out atm).
If you do have kids it seems like Disney+ would be a great deal, but not really seeing a lot otherwise. Mandalorian itself was actually a bit too kid movie style for me despite the bounty hunter premise but not gut-wrenching bad in that way like the prequel movies. Some of the National Geographic stuff looks OK but also seeing a lot of āAncient Aliensā type garbage.
I am seeing ads for a $12.99/mo bundle with Hulu, Disney+ and ESPN+. Itās probably still somehow a terrible deal even though it sounds good. Iāve seen nothing advertised from ESPN+ that would make me think Iām missing anything. Hulu is legit though. I have it and donāt even use it (came free with my phone plan) but the GF has it and she gets a ton of college football games, even stuff on ACC network that Xfinity doesnāt even have.
Watching Return to Oz right now and this is A+. Thank you.
I think I was like 7 when I saw Return to Oz and that movie absolutely fucked with my head.
Trolly Digs Further Into The Disney+ Vaults:
The Nat Geo section is disappointing. Surely they have more stuff than this? Hoping they add more content in the future. Having said that, the Jane Goodall documentary Jane is choice. Cannot believe how much archival footage they have. Iām just a little bit into the Apollo documentary, but I love it. Full disclosure: I could watch archival space exploration footage all day.
Aw shit, they got The Muppet Move! And The Great Muppet Caper? And the Muppet Christmas Movie? Stoners, rejoice.
I want to re-recommend The Sign of Zorro to anyone who likes vintage swashbuckling action/adventure movies. Itās remarkable how much Batman cribbed notes from the old Zorro stories. Also, Sgt. Garcia and Diegoās butler are some of the GOAT character actors. Very sad that the Disney Zorro TV series isnāt in the vaults.
Thereās a selection of trash-TV animal shows in the vaults. My mom (a retired rural veterinarian) loves to hate-watch Dr. Pol and then she loves to tell me why heās a hack and he doesnāt know the first thing about removing porcupine quills from a dogās snout. Sheās going to love that thereās like three vet shows and theyāre all super, super gross to watch. Cesar Milan is there too. I hate dogs, so I love watching him tell obnoxious dogs who the fucking boss is (itās Cesar).
Based on what I know about TV writing, its likely the major staff writers got turned over at some point during the tenure. Its really hard to keep an entire writing staff together for five full seasons. One of the writers for āYouāre the Worstā posts on 2+2, and he was only there for the first 4 of five seasons. Its just not feasible to expect a staff to stay available during a layoff and not take any other gigs during downtime that could stretch into the next writing season.
More than likely, all the ones with the best ideas moved on and the show ended up with an entirely different tone.
Dont expect Hulu to be a great deal for long. Disney owns roughly 75 of the content on there, and NBC is taking their ball and running next year, so Hulu and Disney + will have essentially the same libraries.
Speaking of porcupine quills in a dog snout, the original Homeward Bound is an excellent family movie for anyone with kids who hasnāt seen it yet.
The bundle with Hulu is only for the version with ads, making it unwatchable for me at least.
1st episode on tonightā¦
Finished El Camino today
Not bad at all, except for the pistol duel and a pretty corny ride off into the wilderness ending. Also WW cameo felt a bit flat, reminded me of the end of the Godfather part 2 flashback when Michael and Tom discuss his future, I assume that was deliberate.
Yes, they have a couple of old Disney nature films. I will watch Living Desert just to make you jealous.
Wow there is some wild shit on Disney+
Watching random Disney stuff from 1940ās to 1960ās and one of the things that strikes me is how rich the soundtracks were back in the days when you could hire an entire symphony orchestra on the cheap. Listen to the incidental music during Sleeping Beauty --itās so very warm and organic. Even the nature documentaries get an expertly-scored orchestral soundtrack.
