We were another one of McNulty’s victims. #Noahsdickbrokemetoo
It’s a shame that the show’s most interesting device - telling the same story from different perspectives - never really ever went anywhere. Especially when the first couple of seasons were largely a murder mystery. But your right JT. The last season was a rollercoaster of bad and lol at the last scene. The End indeed
Anyone trying out Disney+ on Tuesday? I don’t really care about Star Wars or Marvel but if my kid watches a Disney show once a week it’s probably worth the $7.
*edit. Ooh, 30 seasons of Simpsons is tempting!
the simpsonsworld app, and later the simpsonsworld portion of the fxx app were both terrible, just blowing it. they cropped 4:3 episodes to 16:9 without even caring about cutting off visual jokes. the commercial breaks weren’t timed right, meaning every act break joke gets butchered. just super shitty, i hope disney does better
Money Heist on Netflix is a solid series if you love heist movies as much as I do. I started watching it to get a bit of Spanish immersion, but now I’m hooked on the story.
ahahahahaha the next episode is even worse. THE ENTIRE EPISODE is just Future Sad Lady POV. Jesus Christ this show.
Future Sad Lady: “I think about killing myself all the time.”
SenorKeeed:
OK so Future Marine Murder Guy is great, lol, greatest gaslighting of all time. The Helen/next door neighbour plot is actually not terrible. Jennifer Jason Leigh is great as neighbour’s horrible mom.
lolololol and now Noah is getting MeToo-ed. Yes. Yes. YES YES YES.
Disneyplus is live. I liked the first episode of The Mandalorian.
signed up for Disney+ so i could rewatch the simpsons from s1e1, i’ll keep you updated.
-s1e4 There’s No Disgrace Like Home is the first great episode
-there is a widescreen crop but it doesn’t seem that bad yet. i’ll let you know if the duff brewery tour sight gag gets botched
It’s fucking crazy The Simpsons are still around. I remember watching it in 1989 when I was in the 8th grade.
I’ve never watched The Simpsons.
So many classic episodes in the first couple of seasons.
But for some reason some seasons don’t show up when I log into disney+ on my PC but they are there when I log on on my roku. Not sure what’s going on there.
Wish they didn’t have the widescreen crop tho…I want to see it how it originally aired.
In Which Yr. Trolly Watches Random Stuff on Disney+ and Talks About It (Warning! tl;dr Content):
So I’m getting my mom a subscription to Disney+ as a Christmas gift and like a good son I am testing it out beforehand --I am definitely not just doing this as an excuse to binge-watch some Disney movies as a grown-ass man.
The Mandalorian (sp?)
A solid exercise in fanservice; pure catnip for nerds who grew up playing with a Boba Fett action figure. Maybe the anti-hero thing is too gritty for younger kids? I definitely saw out hero slice a dude in half in the first five minutes. It has a dark vibe that I wouldn’t feel comfortable showing to kids. I don’t know how you can have a series where the main character only has one facial expression, but Narcos made it work for two seasons (oh snap!).
Sleeping Beauty
Gotta respect the classics. Animation is really incredible, those old-school Disney guys were absolute craftsmen who knew how to work within the limits of the technology the had. Maleficent possibly one of the GOAT Disney characters, voice acting between her and the Fairy Godmothers is A+ work. It’s odd that these minor characters totally upstage Prince Studbro and Princess Beauty (Do the heroes even have real names? Do they even have any lines? I can’t remember).
Frozen
I’m a half-hour into this. As someone who is part Norwegian-American I am very hyped to see the first ever Scandinavian Disney princess, and this story of a girl who enjoys shutting herself off emotionally from friends and family is the most Nordic thing I’ve ever heard of. Also there it starts off with an ice fishing scene, which is just straight out the fuckin UP. Basically A+ representation. “Let It Go” is a classic: catchy, but not so catchy that it becomes an ear worm.
Some Stuff You Shouldn’t Sleep On
Some of the old live-action Disney action-adventure movies are absolute gems. I mean your 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, your Treasure Islands, your Swiss Family Robinsons, lots of classic stuff there that you shouldn’t overlook if you have kids.
My Grievances
#1 biggest problem with the interface is that it is gummed up with lots of direct-to-VHS crap that no one wants or asked for, and that can make it very challenging to find the good stuff amidst the chaff.
Also, there are an absolute shitload of classic 1950-1960’s Disney TV shows that they are holding out on us. Where is Zorro? Where is The Wonderful World of Disney, for Christ’s sake? Really hope they release some of the old-school Disney content at a later date. I know Disney didn’t fucking lose the rights to The Wonderful World of Disney, what are they trying to pull here?
Misc
Also, I am told there is every Simpsons episode ever and all the Marvel and Star Wars movies and a couple of Nat Geo docs. So there’s that.
Final Verdict
It’s a high price point relative to Netflix, but imho there’s solid value if you have kids or a mother who is a hardcore Disney fan. Interface makes it hard to separate wheat from chaff, there is some quality old-school content that Disney is inexplicably hiding in their super-secret vaults. Overall, I rate it A-.
One other Disney thing I need to get off my chest is how wild the ending of Bedknobs and Broomsticks is. Most of the movie is boring and you should skip it, but go watch the last 20 minutes of it, Angela Lansbury uses witchcraft to summon summon an undead army of warriors to fight off a Nazi invasion. I mean, I’m not making this up at all, Angela Lansbury is flying around on a broom with a Brodie helmet and a Union Jack and a sabre taunting the Nazis while a spectral army is slapping around Wehrmacht commandos. That is some absolutely wild shit that just blew my mind when I saw it as a young child.
Finally got around to watching this; thanks to all in thread for convincing me. Great stuff.
I’ll add my 2 cents (mildly controversial?) that I actually thought S2 was better than S1. As I thought back on it after finishing, I realized that in a certain sense it was reminiscent of the Wire, in its ability to get across multiple perspectives beyond the main characters (the mothers, the black FBI officer, the accused killer, the politicians, etc). It happened in a much more partial/incomplete way than as executed on The Wire, but similar and very effective imo.
The ending of B and B is one of the most batshit crazy things ever put to film.
They edited the Han/Greedo shootout yet again for Disney+:

Wut? This is one of my favorite episodes.
