I’ve been watching The Day I Met El Chapo, which is the true story of one of Mexico’s most famous telenovela actresses writing a drunken tweet about El Chapo, who then writes her a letter from prison and they eventually workshop the idea of her producing a movie based on his life. Then El Chapo escapes from prison and they agree to meet in the Sinaloa mountains. Then Sean Penn shows up and fucks up everything. I’ve been watching it for Spanish immersion, but it’s a fun watch if you like Narcos and stuff like that.
Liked Greyhound. Tom Hanks as Captain of a destroyer on convoy duty to England in WW2. Not as good as DAS BOOT, but not much is. Nice companion piece though.
Old Guard was entertaining in a shallow way. Substituted body count and action for world building and nuance.
Finished Dark Season 3
Gotta admit, didn’t love it. It got good in the final two episodes, but overall, this season was just WAY too confusing. The first two were confusing, but in a good way, as it was interesting and you could eventually figure out what was going on. But the third season felt like it just got complicated for the sake of getting complicated until they finally explained things and had some big reveals in the last couple episodes.
I got a bit tired of all the riddles and enigmatic conversations. One person would be like, “What the fuck is going on? What should I do?” and then the other person is all like, “You will know when the answer is presented to you lest you know what you already know and the knot this the knot that.”
I mean, shut the fuck up already and get to the point. And then it turns out everybody was wrong all along and Claudia figured everything out. Again, the end was interesting, especially when you realize how completely fucked up the family trees got and why certain people disappeared in the end, but I didn’t think Season 3 was nearly as fun as the other two.
EDIT: Despite my complaints, the season was still enjoyable overall and way better than most shows.
Finished S1 of Dark. Was good but didn’t quite live up to the hype imo. Is S2 better?
Will probably start S2 anyway this week I suspect because Mrs j enjoys it.
It’s about equal to season 1.
Ok, it’s a reasonable way to spend several evenings I guess.
Just finished snowpiercer. If you can get past the physics lols and like the look of the concept I would give it a thumbs up.
Fuck
Channel surfing and ads are back, baby!
The free version comes with commercials and plenty of vintage hits like “The King of Queens” and “Everybody Loves Raymond.” And it offers something viewers might have missed while they were logged onto other streamers: the ability to channel-surf.
The service said it has brought back the analog-era pastime by grouping its programming into distinct feeds, with one dedicated to NBC’s late night hosts and another for the network’s morning franchise, “Today,” among others.
The ad-supported version offers more than 10,000 hours of content, with no more than five minutes of commercials for each hour of programming. The platform also comes in two other versions: Peacock Premium, with ads and more 20,000 hours of content, at $5 a month (or free for Comcast and Cox cable subscribers); and a second iteration of Peacock Premium, with no commercials, at $10 a month. The basic Netflix plan costs $9 a month. Hulu offers a low-cost option, with ads, for $6 a month.
Nice. I have used Pluto for a while now to channel surf for free. They have all of the old hits from the 90s. Nice to have more mindless options.
I’m not sure what Galaxy Brain decided to call it pee cock, but I assume not everyone is as childish as me.
Since I have Comcast cable, I get Peacock for free. I checked it out once. Mostly garbage. People in my household already have reruns of The Office and Friends on all day, I don’t need more old sitcom episodes.
Yeah this was a big shocker today, not just because of how often I’ve seen him on TV and how young he was but how suddenly it happened. Seriously, fuck aneurysms.
Like American Gladiators
Loss of a legend.
It’s super garbage. Like, they dont even have Friends. If we are comparing new streaming services HBO Max >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Peacock
German sub crewman was one of the deadliest jobs in WW2, along with allied bomber crew, Japanese Navy Anything, kamikaze pilot, and, actually, infantrymen of any country. I think the third infantry division took like 300% casualties during the war, but it fought in every European theater campaign, Northern Africa, Sicily, Italy, and then France and Germany. And everyone who was there was there for the duration, no one got rotated out, so if you were an infantryman in the 3rd ID fighting in Northern Africa, there was basically a 100% chance you were getting hit.
But being in the Navy seems bad because there’s literally nothing you can do, no action you can take. And there were some bad losses, of course. The Hood, Royal Oak, Arizona, Oklahoma, Indianapolis, Franklin (like 800 men died but they still saved the ship, amazingly). All those killed high hundreds. But statistically, besides the submarine arm, being in the Navy was way safer than being an infantryman. Hell, being on the Franklin the day it gets hit might be safer than being an infantryman in Northern Africa with the 3rd ID.
Just starting season 3 of Dark. I thought for a while before committing but decided I can’t back out now. I’m not as enamored as many of you, but I can see why it’s so highly praised (I think). The way they’ve fitted the plot together for the moment is elegant and, whilst I can’t be bothered to map it all out, my feeling is they haven’t had any contradictions or loose ends so far. Except for perhaps the time machine. Is there really only one? It seems to hop about here and there and always be available to whoever needs it without strife, despite being with different ‘sides’ at various points.
I have worked out my issue with it, though, it’s not actually about anything. The characters exist in a world vacated of politics and society. Everyone’s white and middle class, they all earn their living so comfortably they barely turn up at their jobs with no consequence. I can understand that that’s the point to an extent—Winden is a sealed off time loop and the events are inevitable—it’s not that I think it’s a mistake from the show’s point of view or intention, just an explanation of why it’s still unsatisfactory to me.
Well, that and that there’s absolutely no jokes.
Yeah I wasn’t contending it was more dangerous. Just more terrifying. Especially being on a sub. Imagine being under water while fucking depth charges are exploding all around you. Or losing power and just sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Or being on the water knowing a bunch of u-boats are lurking ready to blow you up and if you’re lucky you die instantly, if not you’re just fucking floating in oil at night until you likely die of thirst or catch on fire or choke on oil. I’d way rather take a bullet.
It’s probably me just having a giant fear of being floating out in the ocean at night. Dan Carlin did an episode on the Indianappolis where after they delivered the bomb they got sunk and thousands of men were stuck in the ocean for days while they were torn apart by sharks. Like 500+ men eaten alive by fucking sharks dude!
