He’s the embodiment of the “if you run into assholes all day” line.
I’m a fan generally but his last Netflix special was a dud imo. We discussed it elsewhere here, but he spent far too much time (seriously like half of it) whining about cancel culture.
But F is for Family is decent. I saw most of the first season and lost track of it, can’t believe they’re already on four.
No don’t be ridiculous. Some computers don’t even have microphones. They’re using our speakers as microphones and listening in that way.
I really liked it. I don’t really see Burr as “whining” about that stuff in his standup because he always digs deeper and finds unexpected jokes or angles to take on them. I don’t think anyone willing to discuss his own story of being groped like that is a whiner. For comparison I thought the latest Chappelle special was much worse when it came to “whining about cancel culture.”
I’m rewatching Daria.
Aside from some anime, it’s one of my all-time favorite cartoons. Nearly 20 years later, it holds up well. It’s just as witty and humorous now as it was then. As a teenager, I related perhaps a bit too much with Daria.
The soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks for an animated show ever. When it was released on DVD, the publisher couldn’t afford the rights to the music. So, it was replaced with bland, generic background music that took away from the show. This meant that there were no original copies of the show in circulation. The fan base was so zealous that they started the Daria Restoration Project where people added the music to the right parts of every episode and made in available via BitTorrent.
There’s a similar torrent for Beavis and Butt-Head around. The official releases cut the music-video segments entirely, and the show is so much better with them.
How could anybody watch Beavis and Butthead without the music videos? They were often the best part of the show.
Unlike Daria, B&B didn’t age well. Some moments still crack me up to this day like when they washed a poodle by putting in a washing machine while channeling Judas Priest by singing “Washing the dog! Washing the dog!”
“It’s a poodle. Set it on delicate.”
I liked both a lot (Chappele more) but I like comics whining about cancel culture, so
I still watch B&B and think it holds up pretty well. It’s dumb teenagers doing dumb shit, which is a pretty eternal premise, but also Judge creates a lot of well-observed side characters and some of the humor is genuinely witty.
Any chance you watched B&B Do America recently? I haven’t seen it since the premiere but remember enjoying not having their antics interrupted by music videos. Plus that killah Red Hot Chili Peepers song. I understand the irony of me now posting a music video…
The thing that drew so many to B&B was how crass it was. I remember the religious right flipping out over how TV was rotting the brains of future generations and that shows like B&B were directing us to hell. Today, it’s tame compared to what we have access to.
There are definitely episodes that hold up well but others tend to rely too much on shock value that simply doesn’t shock anymore. It’s like how Lenny Bruce was a legendary comedian due to his crass comedy but compared to now there’s nothing controversial about it. As a result, it isn’t funny anymore.
I never even thought about the videos not being available in B&B repeats
There are almost no YouTube clips on Daria either. I assume it’s because they all taken down due to DMCA violations the instant they go up. So the only clips that do exist are ones where music isn’t being played. Though there is one clip where 5 seconds of “Them Bones” by Alice in Chains is still there.
i should have rewatched mad men while i had the chance but i instead rewatched Peep Show and i don’t regret it, it’s a top tier 5-bagger. mark’s constant historical references from the 3 books he’s read are amazing. no other show makes as many throw-away jokes about yalta. “if i win, i win. and if i lose, i’ll just ignore it. that’s stalin’s prerogative.”
Same thing for Northern Exposure. Terrible there’s not some work around for that.
Also WKRP, which is still hilarious IMO except that it is dated on social matters (playing homosexuality for laughs, for example).
This is more of a rhetorical question bc I don’t want to be spoiled, but wtf? Glenn Close is only on The Shield for one season?
The workaround is to the Blu Ray set with restored original audio

EDIT: I’m sure the US website has the same thing.

All Artemis Fowl has to offer is hollow plotting and bad VFX. Even as a film that’s available as part of a Disney+ subscription, you would be hard pressed to endure this joyless slog.
