The Sumo Thread

Speaking of obese rikishi, here’s a former one (Masunoyama) who’s completely transformed his body:

Looks way better after, but he’s got that loose skin over his lower pecs that I’m guessing he is gonna have to get surgery for. I guess some parts of being a rikishi you just can’t unwind.

Cursed. All that work and in the end you got them droopy nips.

This is what he was like when he was active (the one in the blue mawashi). Watch to the end.

finally caught up, wow what a basho, this onosato kid is sick af, seems insane that he’s got a legit shot at making ozeki in his 4th basho in august.

so many great performances, just amazing all around

Unlikely, as the general criteria is at least 33 wins as a sanyaku rikishi, and he had only been just promoted to Komusubi at the time of his yusho.

But if he repeats in July (not August), especially with a 15-0 record, they might at least have to consider making an exception.

You are correct that he appears to be the most dominant sumo wrestler to burst onto the scene since Hakuho. Fingers crossed that injuries don’t derail his career.

How does one generally select their favorite sumo wrestler, assuming people typically have a “favorite”? By style? By their personality outside of the ring? How they look?

yeah seems unlikely but it’s in the realm of possibility

anyway, the other thing I thought about is that there is a parallel universe were just a couple of things go the other way and Takayasu has like 4 yusho instead of 0

Those of us who are members of the Takayasu Fan Club are absolutely crushed that said parallel universe never materialized.

I really hope not.

Actually, the looks of a rikishi is a major factor in their popularity. Endo became a sensation as much for his handsome mug as his sumo acumen. Ditto Terao, Chiyonofuji, and a number of other rikishi of yore.

She’s a well-known sumo celebrity. Regularly covers sumo and appears at basho and other sumo-related events.

My boy Takakeisho stays winning

His Ozeki-hood is teetering on the brink, so it’s good that he’s winning at home.

Sumo–where enormously obese men consistently score beautiful brides.

Two basho ago Takerufuji came from out of nowhere to win the yusho. After this basho, he’s likely to drop back down to Makushita and out of the paid ranks as a result of consecutive kyujos.

Sumo is a brutal, unforgiving sport.

They need to give them more time off to heal, it’s just absurd expecting guys with torn limbs to come back in after a basho or two.

You can take all the time off you want, but unfortunately, you lose your ranking in proportion to your time away from the dohyo. There used to be a system where an injured rikishi was given a basho to heal without losing their rank, but they did away with that at some point.

Seems fair to me.

Terunofuji cements his status as a Dai-Yokozuna with double-digit yushos. Takanosho came out of nowhere to make it interesting. Kirishima & Takakeisho are Ozeki no more. And a white bear claimed the Juryo yusho.
