The Sumo Thread

All the interesting guys are out, should be a dull basho.

I’m late to post this, but Jason Sumo has started doing a sumo pick-the-winner contest.

I actually like those ones better than most.

Catching up on the sumo action from overseas. Kirishima’s Ozeki reign was a brief one, unless he can pick up 10 wins next basho and regain it.

Meanwhile, Onosato looks like he’ll be the next Ozeki in short order, and then likely stomp his way to being the next Yokozuna as well.

I don’t really follow stuff closely, but what’s up with Hakuho’s protege Hakuoho? He looked awesome his first time. I know he got injured. Is he still dealing with that?

Yeah, he had shoulder surgery but it’s clearly still not right, as evidenced by how taped up it still is.

Is he totally washed or do you think he has a comeback left in him?

Hard to say. He’s very young. Plenty of time to fully recover and realize his potential.

But because the banzuke (tournament rankings) is so unforgiving, it’s almost impossible for rikishi to avoid rushing back from injuries before they are fully healed, rather than miss several basho and find themselves far, far down the rankings in a lower division.

And it appears that that is what he has done.

Who and we looking at and what exactly is he doing?

Isegahama & Shibatayama oyakatas. Both former Yokozuna.

Thanks. What are they doing in the photo? Looks like the are working at a market or something?

Can’t see exactly what they’re doing here but they’re working at the basho. At a table selling some type of sumo related goods.

If you come to a basho at the kokugikan you’ll see a bunch of these guys in the blue coats and they’re all former rikishi, performing various and often surprisingly menial tasks during the tourney.

They even work the ticket booths outside the venue. The recently deceased ex-Terao was immensely popular and always used to work the ticket booth. There would be other booths open as well, but the line to his would be several times longer than the others.

Oh, ok. That makes sense. No surprise. I knew they worked the bashos.

I thought this was like some sort of in between basho job to supplement income or something.

If they tried that sort of thing in America, drunk fans would try to wrestle them.
