The Sumo Thread

I wouldn’t go that far. He’s only one behind, and if he doesn’t beat Hoshoryu today then Takerufuji wins even if he doesn’t show up to the venue.

***And at the end of the day, it didn’t matter. The man rose to the occasion and got it done–bum ankle and all.

I really like Wakamotoharu. Dude just seems like a real… craftsman. Not really sure there’s a good word for it (and I’m 100% going on vibes here) but he just seems to take it more seriously than anyone else. Like the dude has never told a joke in his life because he’s too busy getting better.

on the other hand he’s got way too many sylables in his name. Four should be the max, and even that should be rare. Like 3 max unless you’re an ozeki, then you can get four.

I’m sorry, sumo names are ridiculous even by Japanese name standards. Wakatakakage? There’s no way, bro.

I was lucky enough to go to the basho a few days ago while visiting Japan with my wife! Saw Takerufiji’s first loss. I know nothing about sumo and feel sort of guilty to have witnessed history in my first taste of the sport, but I absolutely loved it. Great crowd, great energy especially when fan favorites were competing (Ura!). Very tense feeling before Takerufiji’s match.

Seems like such a fun sport with the characters, traditions, etc.

It is. The more you watch & the more you learn, the more you follow the career trajectories and the drama over the 15 days of the tournament, the more you can appreciate the depth Y tradition of the sport. Hope you continue to watch!

So it looks like ultimately Hakuho and his band of merry rikishi will be moving to Isegahama-beya, home of the Yokozuna Terunofuji and newly crowned yusho winner Takerufuji.

Can’t imagine what chaos will ensue.

Hawaiian sumo legends Konishiki & Musashimaru get out eaten by three slender, young Japanese girls (Japanese only). Wakanohana also there, along with a few active rikishi.

Wow, RIP to a legend.

Only English article I’ve seen so far:

Can’t believe you guys beat me to it.

He was Yokozuna, soon followed by Musashimaru, when I first began watching sumo. Saw him once at the Kokugikan at my first ever basho as well.

R.I.P.

wat

lol

So I decided to look up that bro who is above Hakuho. This was LOL

Also, I’m no sumo expert but this seems illegal

Looks like Takerufuji, last basho’s winner out of nowhere, will be absent from the upcoming basho. Ankle is still not healed.

Former Ozeki Asanoyama is also out.

Is there a rule against strangling your opponent in the ring?
