Now I own the Japanese equivalent of an autographed OJ Simpson card.

U can get a Jordan tegata for a cool $35k.

How much for an O.J. one?

Need to get my hands on some of these.

Kyushu basho is quickly turning into a helter skelter affair.

Anyone can win. Hopefully it’ll be Takayasu.

Looking like he’s going to capture his first yusho barring a collapse.

Meanwhile, there’s a Posture Princess Imposter/Cosplayer in the crowd today!

Surprised Ichinojo hasn’t been booted from the tournament? I guess the JSA is going to quietly pretend nothing happened.

Is it happening?

It’s a wild finish in Kyushu!

Gutted for Takayasu, but an Abi yusho is a nice conciliation prize.

Oh wow, what a ride. Abi!

The English-language sumo fandom is having a meltdown rn. Half the fans love Abi’s schtick and the other half are haters.

what happened?

ughhhhhh

A controversial wrestler won a tournament in the most trollish possible way and now everyone is Big Mad.

I’m not an abi hater and I’m not triggered by henka but I am a takayasu stan so this combination is pretty irritating

Abi has no schtick. He’s a talented rikishi. I’ve been on his bandwagon since the early days and knew that if he ever got committed and focused he could become one of the best ever.

Problem was that he wasn’t focused and committed, and was a bit of a lackadaisical goofball. Until he got suspended for COVID violations. Then, faced with the threat of losing his career and having just gotten married with a newborn, he finally become contrite and serious and dedicated himself to the sport.

His results have been spectacular ever since, and with the top of the banzuke in chaos, he’ll be in the yusho hunt again for sure.

All that said, I really wanted Takayasu to win.

Agree 100%. I guess by “schtick” I meant his behavior off the ring and all the antics he got up to breaking COVID protocols. That seems to have generated a lot of heat among international fans and now this is like a huge heel move against Takayasu, whom people basically like.

I was all aboard the Takayasu train and was sure he was going to get it done this time–until I saw that his final-day opponent was Abi. Just the worst possible matchup at the worst possible time for Takayasu.

And sure enough…

In any other scenario I would have been ecstatic for an Abi yusho. But this one, in this manner (more to do with how Takayasu lost than how Abi won) leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

Hope Takayasu can come back from this and pull off a late-career Kisenosato-like miracle win to cap off an otherwise highly respectable career.
