Why does it matter? Because Coach Tony K is the OP of this infamous thread. If you are a wrestling fan and have never heard of it, you might be missing something.
AEW is absolutely killing weekly television. Producing the most compelling wrestling show in decades for me. Considering the no crowd show they still end up 5th in demo and around 900k viewers against the NBA.
My wife and I went to New Japan Super Showdown in November and it was great even though I only knew like 3 of the wrestlers, I was really looking forward to AEW making its way to the west coast this year.
Pre-COVID, I was strongly considering going to AEW’s May PPV in Vegas as a precursor to the WSOP.
Anyone listen to Jim Cornette’s podcast? I love how apoplectic he gets over AEW and kind of want them to troll him with matches and angles that they know he will hate. I might concede that he has some points and I don’t particularly care for Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks, but fuuuuck, I love Orange Cassidy. He absolutely has to win his next match against Jericho.
I did something similar on the East Coast in October. Was a lot of fun. The main event was absolutely stacked (Okada/Ibushi/Tanahashi vs Evil/Sanada/Naito).
Hope I can go to a live show again sometime in the next decade.
Vince McMahon issued an edict this past week that talent can no longer “engage with outside third parties,” which would presumably include platforms like Cameo and Twitch.
WWE held a call with talent last Sunday regarding the reinvention of the product. During the call, it was said that WWE owns the real names of talent, not just their character names.
McMahon followed up by sending a letter on Thursday. McMahon wrote that it was imperative that they promote and protect the brand in every conceivable way, and that talent have 30 days to stop engaging with third parties.
“Some of you are engaged with outside third parties using your name and likeness in ways that are detrimental to our company,” McMahon wrote. “It is imperative that these activities be terminated within the next 30 days (by Friday October 2). Continued violations will result in fines, suspension, or termination at WWE’s discretion.”
McMahon wrote that these actions are necessary as part of WWE’s rebuilding process as they “enter the next phase of growth at WWE.”
It will be interesting to see if this is legal in any way. WWE wrestlers are classified as independent contractors, which has been heavily criticized in the past by shows like HBO’s Last Week Tonight.
Watching less WWE now than I have at any point in the last 30+ years. A big part of that is no crowds, but shit like this makes me not even miss it that much.
They should be announcing the G1 blocks soon. I’ll probably watch some of that.
