I expected the military budget to go up, but not by $80B. I would have expected CBP Enforcement actions to go down, not to more or less double. I exepected less of the wall to be built and not more. These are things going up, but I’ll still count them as accomplishing less.

Are there any estimates on percentage of attempted border crossing that result in a CBP enforcement actions? Have enforcement actions gone up merely because there are more opportunities for enforcement?

No one knows, but there should essentially be zero, so I’m not worried about that or blaming people who are doing nothing wrong.

Instead of discouraging migrants from making the journey to the US altogether, prevention through deterrence pushed them into more inhospitable areas. Crossings through the Sonoran Desert skyrocketed. What was once a quick hop over a border fence turned into a multiday trek through the desert.

Also, like with prohibition/war on drugs, it creates a dangerous network of people serving this market. And that is used to justify even more military equipment, surveillance, and prisons.

Biden did end remain in place for asylum seekers and that’s great, but it addresses only a very small part of the suffering that border enforcement causes. It affects 4 or low-5 figures of people. There are over 2 million CBP Enforcement actions already this year.

I wonder if this pole captures differences in the initial expectations from the Biden admin more than their performance to that standard.
E.g: all I expected on immigration was the trump status quo minus the most egregious stuff and less xenophobic rhetoric, and that’s exactly what we got.
