This is not unexpected. I mean the guy helped construct the mandatory minimum sentence bill on drug possession in the 80s that led to the prison boom in the first place. Guy probably thought it was a huge success.
Just like people thinking he’s gonna forgive student loans. He’s the fucker who created the bill making them non-disbursable in bankruptcy.
Look at the guy’s history. He’s in part responsible for nearly every single major problem we have today as a country. Why would he ever go back?
Your argument is that it wouldn’t work because they’ve never done it before
The entire theme of this forum the last few years has been that democrats are terrible at politics and your argument now is that actually doing what they’ve been doing is optimal
It’s pretty hard to argue for “optimal”, but I do think in our frustration we are sometimes slow to acknowledge how helpless anybody is in the face of enthofascist populism. See, for reference, the entire history of humanity.
Establishment Dem smug hubris is infuriating for sure and having a bunch of old people in denial about reality makes things worse, but I think we’d be surprised how poorly other strategies work as well. Once someone whips up a critical mass of hate, nothing stops it except for a massive catastrophe.
It all boils down to state sovereignty. We have the system we have because that is how much power the states were willing to give up to form the Union. Any real change involves forcing states to give up more power.
