A word of caution: in the last election for LA County Sheriff the candidates were the incumbent Jim McDonnell and Alex Villanueva, who was endorsed by the Democratic party. I did zero other research. It turns out Villanueva is an epic piece of crap.

This is a good point. It also reminds me of another flaw in the naive capitalist model. Generally we are led to believe that the consumer exchanges cash for a good because after the transaction the good delivers greater utility to the consumer than the cash. But there is overwhelming evidence that a ton of consumer purchases only happen because it created a transient dopamine bump for the buyer with no genuine consumer value add. This probably ties to the notion of destructive planned obsolescence because that generates a series of little dopamine bumps and, after all, in many case that is the actual product.
The dopamine bump is the utility.

Indeed. And within limits thatās ok, we shouldnāt actively try to prevent people from little moments of happiness. The problem is having systems that actual erode long term consumer welfare with each transaction but establish a behavior pattern because of the momentary elation. That fact pattern is indistinguishable from drug abuse, for example.

Iām sure those signs make Pence very uncomfortable, so Iām okay with them.
Depends on his lifestyle. A million bucks a year is a lot less after he spends it all. But if heās been careful his books alone could probably have made him enough. Hell, maybe just The Run of His Life, that sold millions of copies.

Watching the beginning of that Chicago 7 movie on Netflix I was really struck by the fact that we have not had a lot of successful political assassinations since then. So many iconic figures cut down.
I think weāre running pretty good and I have a lot of anxiety about the future.

I think that the security around the most prominent figures must have gotten much better. Canāt imagine itās because there are fewer crazies running around. But guys like the mayor of Wichita are in the toughest spot, thereās no way all the medium and small cities in the country have the resources to protect their mayors.
Basically if Trump was a trans woman

Definitely worth a read. Strikes me as one of the relatively few insightful statements of Trumpist psychology. Thatās what I meant about 100 phd dissertations concerning the 4 years flat approve/disapproval curve, impervious to new information (itās anti-bayesianism). Facts donāt matter (or arenāt accessed) by 40% while the other 60% strongly disapprove.
Mayor Whipple almost got his Charmin squeezed.
