The Presidency of Donald J. Trump, Episode XIV: T-minus 97 Hours

This did not happen with Gerald Ford

Ford was an elected official, but wasn’t elected to the position from where he assumed the presidency, which is essentially the same case for Pompeo.

the idea that there will be any amendment that has anything to do with selecting the president is 100% pure fantasy in the current environment.

Geez. Melania is basically a lower key version of Donald.

What work did they believe in, exactly? And how in the hell did they think that it was building to anythjng other than an attempted hostile takeover of our democratic institutions? These people are either horrible liars or too stupid to be trusted with any kind of responsibility. Either way I’m not shedding any tears for them.

Dave Weigel retweeted it. It must be true!

That No-Fly list is gonna get really long.

Looking forward to future deplorable tears. Or an airline version of Parler.

US political parties, on the other hand, have no centralized structure. Most importantly, they do not really control who can run on their party tickets. Party elites can direct funding to certain candidates, and they can indicate approval or disapproval, but since candidates are chosen in primary elections, they cannot actually control who wins the nomination. This makes it difficult to screen out extremists, especially if the party’s existing officeholders and donors are divided or there is a large field of candidates. This is how Trump won nomination in 2016.

That said, there is not much, in terms of political structure or culture, that would prevent QAnon from spreading further within the Republican Party. Even if party elites were to wage a concerted effort to build a wall against its adherents, they have limited control over the party’s grassroots. It is possible that a charismatic moderate might reshape discourse on the right, but it may be that the only way to stop QAnon is to somehow remove the demand for such extremist and conspiratorial thinking among the electorate.

From what I saw people on the left in DC told people not to go to the capitol for this and stay back in their neighborhoods and wait for after. The few times proud boys have come to DC after the cops start dispersing people they start flooding out to the surrounding areas and terrorize the communities. I think the idea was that what the Trump people were doing at the capitol doesn’t involve them, they aren’t going to go and fight for Biden and being there would be a strategic blunder because it gives more credence to the idea that antifa was there, but they were prepared to protect their communities in the areas where the Trump people might spread out to after.

Re: Parler’s blacklisting; Didn’t a similar web hosting thing happen with stormfront but they eventually found a provider? Although I guess hosting a website with a few thousand views and hosting a service with millions of users requires incredibly different things?
