It doesn’t matter whether his endorsement hurts or helps them. He is exacting a specific kind of mental abuse. He portrays to the public that his approval will make or break you, and he expects the people he endorses to play along.

I feel like it’s more important as a cult-building tool than anything. In several ways it reinforces the reality that all actors in the Republican Party are his minions.
It’s his way of saying you’re a subservient underling with his seal of approval, but the moment you step out of line you will be attacked and shunned by all. There’s no such thing as a passive relationship with Trump; he dictates the relationship and the terms thereof. Your only option is whether or not to obey his orders.
