Let the advertising people handle this please. Please. One time let the people who brainwash people for a living do their thing. It doesn’t actually matter why people vote or don’t vote. What matters is that they do or don’t. I really need the Democrats to stop caring about doing things the right way when it comes to stuff like ads.
The time for white hat has passed. We’re talking about the end of the republic if we lose. It’s been black hat time ever since the GOP started obstructing literally everything.
These people get you to do way worse/harder things than go vote. Let them handle this. Not Democratic party people… people who make ads for commercial products in competitive national markets please.
All of the ads should be focused around one of two premises:
We’re going to give you X.
They’re going to take away Y.
Everything the candidate is saying, “I’m XYZ and I approved this message,” should be almost entirely focused on #1. Healthcare, living wages, etc.
If PACs want to go negative, it’s gotta be about #2. Show people how it hurts them DIRECTLY. Ads about how he’s hurting small groups of people who can’t vote are not going to win us this election, because the people who experience empathy and heartbreak over that are already activated. They’re already knocking doors and voting.
We’ve gotta get the average voter, and the average voter is almost entirely concerned with how either candidate impacts their life directly and slightly concerned with how either candidate impacts their family directly. So tell the voting population what you’re doing for them, and pick things that are major and apply to most of them.
It’s OK to mention that Trump is destroying democracy whilst also acknowledging that he’s doing it in a really opaque and boring way that no one normal understands or has the time to care about. People care that it’ll cost them $10,000 to determine if their headache is just because they’re exhausted or because they have a tumour.
The problem is that most Americans do not understand this and will not be made to understand this until it’s too late. Most people think American democracy is invincible, and trying to convince them otherwise will get you laughed at and told that you’re insane. It sounds fringe. So making ads about that will blow up in our faces.
Plus we may not realize that a lot of people don’t really care that much about democracy, like it is what it is, they vote every couple years and nothing changes for them, so what? Tell them what’s going to change for them, that’s what they care about.
You remember that scene in Idiocracy where he finally gives up and just makes some crap up that’s simpler that they can understand? It’s time to have the people who sell sugar water on the television sets do that for us. If what’s actually happening is too complicated it’s time to fight fire with fire and simplify it for them, even if we have to tell some lies in the process.
The fact that Bernie gets this (almost his entire platform will never pass and wouldn’t work if it did) is a big part of why he’s doing as well as he’s doing.
They do, but Republicans will just lie through their teeth and tell you that their teeth and tell you that they have a better and cheaper plan for that. So it creates a who-do-you-believe situation and if you’re nerdy enough to follow politics and actually go through the plans you’re probably already voting democrat.
You need to attack the lying and corruption with everything you have or you’ll be stuck in a purgatory of bothsiderism. Facts have to matter before you claim your plans are factually better.
I mean don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying “lets do what Hillary did”. Hillary attacked Trump on all fronts but it was mostly from an identity-politics perspective. Certainly you aren’t winning over mid-western voters by waving a vagina around and complaining about mean things Trump said.
Yeah I’ve already made the leap to ‘voters clearly don’t care that much if you’re lying so we should definitely be telling at least tactical lies’. When in Rome I guess.
Whats the lesson in 2016? You were coming off the lowest turnout midterm of all time and you barely lost a very strange election in which Clinton won the popular vote and actually had the raw vote totals to beat Obama 2012 in the electoral college. W’re currently coming off the highest turnout midterm in a 100 years. Focusing on 2016 and ignoring 2018,2008, 2006 etc is learning that mice is the plural of mouse and applying it as a general rule.
