I don’t think you can have effective government without giving it power that can be abused if extremists take power.
I’d prefer that part were stripped from the definition. It didn’t originally mean non-state action anyway.
This itself is bad faith. Obama didn’t drone people and just say “trust me he was an imminent threat”. There is no hypocrisy for supporting Obama killing bin Laden and al-Awlaki and disapproving of Trump assassinating Quds leadership because congress gave approval to targeting Al Qaeda leadership as part of the global war on terror back in 2001. No such justification exists for targeting Quds leadership.
People can criticize Obama’s use of drones but lumping it in with what Trump did is either bad faith or ignorance, whether it comes from the right or the left.
“Effective” changes nothing in that sentence. Take it out and the sentence is clearly true and the “Effective” part is just a subset.
Yeah good job sending over the impeachment articles. Trump is already waxing that ass and the rest will soon follow.
I know few agree here but sending the articles over is stupid stupid stupid.
I think that terrorism should be defined in such a way that nothing can be both a war crime and terrorism. As I see it, one of the problems of terrorism is that it usurps the state’s Monopoly on political violence.
The costs to his petulant trade war with China are massive and will be felt for decades
Much like all his other petulant decisions he made that were based on just being different from Obama.
He is a illiterate, mush brain, moron and even if he returns China relations to their previous order he is guaranteed to massively screw more things up along that path.
I am very anti-libertarian and talking about effective government is one way of striking a blow against those who believe there can be no such thing.
Obama droned the fuck out of people, he surged troop levels by over 100k in Afghanistan if you count mercenaries (contractors) doing horrific damage, and funny how everyone is leaving Libya out of these defences. He presided over a solid 8 years of war. He had some accomplishments too, but an awful lot of it fucking sucked and on the whole US actions from 2008-2016 were shit and there are probably a hundred places to call Obama a war criminal and put him on trial at the Hague. The best we got has sucked.
Why would Iran have threatened to bomb our embassies? They would have just done it.
Fffff so sick of the dumb collective running this country. Almost makes me miss the sinister and evil collective (not that the current admin is not sinister and evil but they are more dumb than anything)
Probably late here, but the fact that the corruption of this administration can be so blatant, so obvious, and so uncontested, and yet have virtually no impact. Just infuriating that this isn’t even in the top 20 stories of the week.
To get away with this shit week after week just emboldens them to push a little farther next week.
This is a good article. But for whatever reasons (perhaps just re election fears) the republicans have totally ceded their congressional responsibilities and instead just act as presidential puppets.
Senate republicans are not about to step up and rein in Trump’s secret war campaign. No, they will instead line up and dutifully defend it at every opportunity and attack anyone who does not follow suit.
It is hard to believe any of them are functioning adults.
Won’t lie I have done a lot of hand waving in the past. However I have slowly come around due to their influence of many here.
With the exception of maybe Lincoln, I don’t think there has been a single morally good POTUS.
As Lord Acton said, “Great men are almost always bad men.”
I didn’t believe the story, but the story wasn’t “Donald Trump says his middle initial stands for genius”, the story was, “Frank luntz said Donald Trump said his middle name stands for genius”. So Frank luntz is a liar, is the new story, which I believe.
Carter continued some pretty bad policy, but POTUS can’t necessarily do everything they want.
